A number for every ball on the table
Eight-ball uses fifteen object balls: solids 1 to 7, stripes 9 to 15 and the black 8. They rack as a triangle, rows of 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, with the 8 in the middle of the third row. For a potting drill, scatter the balls, press, and play whichever comes up. A pick lands on a solid 7 times in 15, and on a stripe just as often. Playing solids? Random number 1 to 15 for a squad or a class
A rugby union side starts in shirts 1 to 15, forwards in 1 to 8 and backs in 9 to 15, so one pick names a position, and 'Forwards 1-8' or 'Backs 9-15' keeps it to one unit. Fifteen divides evenly only as three groups of 5 or five of 3. Set how many to 15, switch repeats off, and deal the shuffled numbers out in fives or threes.
Tips
- Each stripe wears the color of the solid eight below it: the 9 is yellow like the 1, the 15 maroon like the 7.
- Ask for 20 numbers and read the average underneath. It settles near 8, the number on the black ball.
- In rotation pool every ball scores its own number. All fifteen add up to 120, so 61 points wins the frame.
Questions and answers
Does this random number generator 1-15 favor any number?
No. Every press gives all fifteen numbers the same chance, whatever came before, so the 8 twice running is luck. Tap Solids or Stripes and the same holds inside that group of seven. Fine for drills and classroom draws, not for prize money.
Can it shuffle the order I pot the balls in?
Rotation has a fixed order: the lowest-numbered ball on the table must be struck first. A shuffled order is a harder drill. Set how many to 15, switch repeats off and pot the balls as listed. Fifteen balls can be ordered in more than a trillion ways.
What if I only need 1 to 9, or more than fifteen?
Tap 'Nine-ball 1-9': nine-ball uses only the balls numbered 1 to 9, in a diamond-shaped rack. For a longer list, open pick a number 1-20. For 0 to 14 or any other range, use the random number generator.
