Ask a friend to "give me a random state in the US" and you will hear Texas, California or wherever they grew up. This random state generator draws fairly from all 50, as a list or on a wheel. Each card shows the capital, largest city, 2025 population, statehood year and outline.

A random US state generator for quizzes and state reports

For state reports, set the count to 1 and draw once per student. The list never repeats, so no two students share a state. On a projector, switch to Wheel view: a random state generator wheel the whole class watches stop beats a list for suspense. A quiz trap: the biggest city is the capital in just 17 states, so 33 cards name two cities.

Pick a random state in the US for a trip, a story or a challenge

For a road trip, choose Lower 48 first, so the random state picker leaves Alaska and Hawaii out. The two rows of chips combine: West plus Under 2 million people leaves Alaska, Hawaii, Montana and Wyoming. For a 50-state challenge, the Seen counter is the checklist, kept on this device. Tips

  • Play higher or lower: draw two states and guess which has more people. Maine against New Hampshire is the cruel one, 468 people apart in 2025.
  • Before you press, have everyone name a random state out loud. With one on screen a match is 1 in 50. With five it is 1 in 10.
  • For the license plate game, stay in List view: draw 5, lock each plate you spot and swap the others.

Questions and answers

Is there a random state wheel?

Yes. Press Wheel above the results and the page becomes a state randomizer wheel. Every state in play gets a slice marked with its two-letter code, because 50 full names would not fit, and the full card appears when it stops. Chips apply first, so West alone makes a 13-slice wheel. Unlike the list, the wheel can land on the same state again, though never twice running.

Can it give me a random US state I can drive to?

Yes. Choose Lower 48 and Alaska and Hawaii leave the draw. To stay closer to home, add a region: the Northeast has 9 states, the Midwest 12, the West 13 and the South 16.

Is this random state generator US only?

Yes: the 50 states and nothing else. Washington, D.C. and the territories are never drawn, because they are not states. Populations and largest cities are US Census Bureau estimates for 1 July 2025, and regions are the bureau's own, which is why Delaware and Maryland sit in the South.

Largest city is the most populous incorporated place, or consolidated city, in the Vintage 2025 city and town estimates, https://www2.census.gov/programs-surveys/popest/datasets/2020-2025/cities/totals/sub-est2025.csv; Honolulu, which Hawaii does not incorporate, is the Census Bureau's Urban Honolulu place. Capitals were checked against https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_capitals_in_the_United_States.
