Narrow it by field

Questions and answers

What is the difference between a PhD and a professional doctorate?

A PhD is a research doctorate: graduate study and original research, ending in a dissertation. Professional doctorates such as the Doctor of Medicine and the Juris Doctor have no dissertation research component and lead toward one profession.

Is a JD or an MD a doctorate?

In the United States both are listed as professional doctorates. The MD is the professional degree of a physician, and the JD is a graduate-entry professional degree that primarily prepares people to practice law.

Does the page say which doctorate pays most or takes longest?

No. Pay, length, cost, rankings and admission rules change every year and differ by school, so the list holds none. Each line says only what the degree is for, checked against its Wikipedia article.

How this list was compiled: 34 doctoral degrees awarded in the United States. Each is named on the English Wikipedia page List of doctoral degrees in the US (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_doctoral_degrees_in_the_US) and has an article of its own, read on 2026-10-01 (address in x.src); a degree with no article of its own is left out. The line on each card is ours, written from the opening of that article, and a script checked that the words behind it are there. Whether a card says research or professional follows the section of the list that names the degree; three are named in both. No salary, length, cost, ranking, licensing or admission claims: those change every year and differ by school. Nothing here says what anyone should study. Licence: facts from the pages named; wording own work
