Pick for Me: Type Your Options and Spin: how it works
Pick for me is a wheel for your own list. Type or paste between 2 and 100 options, one per line, press Spin the wheel, and the pointer lands on one of them. The wheel opens with a sample dinner list so you can see it work; replace it with whatever you are stuck on. Your list stays in this browser and is there when you come back.
Type the options, then spin
Click into the box under the wheel and replace the sample with your own lines: restaurants, baby names, which game to play, whose turn it is to drive. Each line becomes one slice, up to 60 characters, and blank lines are ignored. Press Spin the wheel or the space bar. The wheel turns for a few seconds and the winner appears in a card under it, with earlier results kept in a log so nobody can claim it landed somewhere else.
Three ways to spin
Normal leaves every option on the wheel, so each spin is a fresh draw. Elimination removes the winner after each spin. Use it to put a whole list in order, such as who picks the film this week, next week and the week after, or to let the wheel strike out options until one survives. Tally keeps every option and counts the wins, which is how you run a best of five when one spin feels too sudden for a big choice. Switching modes keeps your list.
Share the wheel, not only the answer
After a spin, Share copies a link that holds your list and the result, so a group chat can see what won and check that every option was on the wheel. The list travels inside the link itself and is never stored on a server. Clear my list empties the box and Reset list brings the sample back. If your device is set to reduce motion, the wheel skips the spin and fades straight to the result, and the pick is just as random.
Tips
- Watch your own reaction as the wheel slows. If you catch yourself hoping it skips an option, cross that one off. If the result disappoints you, you have learned what you wanted, so go and do that.
- Agree on the rules before the spin: one spin, or best of five in Tally mode.
- Give everyone a veto first. Each person deletes one line they cannot stand, then the wheel picks from what is left and nobody is stuck with their worst option.
- Past about 30 options the labels on the wheel get small. The full text always shows in the result card, but a shorter list is easier for a group to follow.
- For chores, put the jobs on the wheel in Elimination mode and let each person spin in turn. Every job goes once, and nobody picked who got the bathroom.
Questions and answers
How does pick for me choose?
When you press Spin the wheel, your browser draws one slice at random and the wheel turns until that slice sits under the pointer at the top. Every line you typed is one slice of the same size, so with eight options each has a 1 in 8 chance. No spin is affected by the one before it, which is why the same option can win twice in a row.
Can I make one option more likely to win?
Yes. Type it on two lines, or three. Each line is its own slice, so an option written twice on a wheel of ten slices wins 2 times in 10 on average. The list shows everyone exactly what was done.
What is elimination mode for?
Anything where each option should be used once. Spin for the order of presentations and every name comes off as it is called. Spin through a list of chores until the wheel is empty. Or run a knockout: keep spinning, and the last option left on the wheel is the winner.
Does my list get saved or sent anywhere?
It is saved in this browser only, so the wheel is still set up when you return on the same device. Nothing you type is sent to us. The one way a list leaves your device is the share link, and that happens only when you copy the link and send it to someone yourself.
What if I do not like what it picked?
Then the wheel has done its job. People often find out what they want at the moment a choice is made for them. If your first feeling was relief, go with the result. If it was a small sinking feeling, pick the option you were hoping for. For choices that matter, use the spin to test your feelings, not to decide.
