Random 7 Digit Number Generator: Exactly Seven Digits: how it works

This random 7 digit number generator draws one whole number from 1,000,000 to 9,999,999, so the result has exactly seven digits and never starts with 0. All 9,000,000 values have the same chance. Tap a quick range for 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 or 9 digits. The result shows with commas, and Copy gives plain digits.

What counts as a 7-digit number

The smallest is 1,000,000 and the largest 9,999,999, so there are 9,000,000. A first digit of 0 would leave a six-digit number, so the first digit runs 1 to 9 and the other six run 0 to 9. Codes are different: an order number is a string of characters, so 0048213 is fair there, and allowing zeros gives 10,000,000 strings.

Worked example: 4,821,337

Read it in groups of three: four million, eight hundred twenty-one thousand, three hundred thirty-seven. The 8 sits in the hundred-thousands place, so it is worth 800,000. Rounded to the nearest million it becomes 5,000,000; to the nearest thousand, 4,821,000. England's national curriculum has Year 6 pupils read, write, order and compare numbers up to 10,000,000, so every result suits that class.

Tips

  • For a code that may start with 0, such as 0048213, open the letter and number page and set Letters to 0 and Digits to 7.
  • Memory game: read the number once, cover the screen and write it down. Then tap 8 digits, then 9.
  • Seven random digits can be a real phone number in the US or Canada. For a story or a screenshot, use 555-0100 to 555-0199, the only block set aside for fiction.

Questions and answers

How likely is it that all seven digits are different?

Less likely than most people guess. Only 544,320 of the 9,000,000 seven-digit numbers have no repeated digit, about 6 in 100, so a result such as 3,107,731 is normal. Numbers that read the same in both directions are rarer: 9,000 exist, or 1 draw in 1,000.

Can it give 7 random numbers instead of one 7-digit number?

Yes. Type your own Lowest and Highest, say 1 and 50, then set How many to 7. Switch No repeats on if each number may come up only once. The random number generator page opens on a plain range and is quicker for that.

How do I draw a batch of 7-digit numbers with no repeats?

Set How many to the size of the batch, up to 100, and switch No repeats on. Order set to Lowest first sorts the list. Copy gives the batch as plain digits with commas between the numbers, and Your picks keeps the last 20 presses. The numbers are fine as test IDs or raffle stubs, not as passwords or door codes.
