Random Month Generator: Days, Seasons, Birthstones and Flowers: how it works
This random month generator is a wheel of the 12 months, and each has the same one in twelve chance. Spin it and the winner comes with its number of days, its season north and south of the equator, its birthstones and its birth flowers. Tap a season to spin three months only.
Pick a random month for a plan or a story
Press Spin the wheel and read the card: October, 31 days, autumn north and spring south, opal and tourmaline, calendula. The two seasons matter to writers: a story set in Sydney in July is a winter story. Seasons are the meteorological kind, three whole months each. Switch to Elimination and each winner leaves the wheel, so twelve spins shuffle the whole year.
Why the last four months are numbered wrong
September to December come from the Latin for seven to ten, yet they are months 9 to 12, because the oldest Roman year began in March. July and August were Quintilis and Sextilis until they were renamed for Julius Caesar in 44 BC and Augustus in 8 BC. January is Janus, March is Mars, May is the goddess Maia and June is Juno. Nobody is sure where April comes from.
Tips
Seven months have 31 days, four have 30 and February stands alone. Make a fist: each knuckle is a 31-day month and each dip is shorter. July and August land on two knuckles.
March and November always begin on the same day of the week. In a common year February joins them, because 28 days is exactly four weeks.
Six months carry more than one birthstone on the American Gem Society list, and the wheel shows them all. Birth flowers follow one common tradition, and other lists differ.
Questions and answers
Does every month have the same chance?
Yes. The wheel has 12 equal slices, so each month comes up one time in twelve and February's short length makes no difference. A random day leans toward the long months: of the 1,461 days in four years, January holds 124 and February 113.
Did August get 31 days so it would match July?
No. The story says Augustus took a day from February so his month would be as long as Caesar's. The scholar Sacrobosco invented it in the 13th century. August was chosen for the honor because several of the emperor's victories fell in it.
Can you give me a random month with a year as well?
The wheel names the month only. For the year, open the random year generator and set the first and last year you will accept. For both from one press, the random date generator writes a full date inside any range you set.
Random Numbers in a Set FormatRandom numbers in a set format: a percent, a fraction, a byte in binary, a label code, a port number or exactly seven digits.
How this list was compiled: The 12 months of the Gregorian calendar, a closed set that is never padded. Day counts are calendar arithmetic, computed with Python's calendar module. Seasons follow the meteorological convention of three whole months, with northern spring starting on 1 March and the Southern Hemisphere reversed: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Season, checked 2026-09-18. Astronomical seasons start about three weeks later, at the equinoxes and solstices. Birthstones are the American Gem Society's month list with every alternate stone kept, https://www.americangemsociety.org/birthstones/, checked 2026-09-18, and they agree with the 12 Wikipedia month articles. Birth flowers and name origins were read from each month's own Wikipedia article, such as https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/January, on 2026-09-18; each item keeps its article's address in the data file. The line under each month gives its days, both seasons, its stones and its flowers; the name origins are in the guide on this page. Plan sources timeanddate.com and Britannica were not used: britannica.com refuses automated requests. Birth flower lists differ from one publisher to the next and no body sets them, so treat the flowers as one common tradition and not a standard. The April article calls that name's origin uncertain, and the guide says so. The May article gives two accounts, the goddess Maia and Ovid's maiores (elders); the guide gives the first.
