How this list was compiled
The 50 things to wear or to leave at home, and the line under each, were written for this page on 2026-10-15; no list was copied. Each row follows a page read on 2026-10-15, published by people who must tell others what to wear at this temperature: nine school recess charts: three schools of Cedar Falls Community Schools, Iowa (Cedar Heights Elementary, Recess Attire Guidelines, 21 October 2024, https://www.cfschools.org/schools/cedar-heights/blog/2024/10/21/6892-recess-attire-guidelines ; Orchard Hill Elementary, Temperature Guidelines, 22 October 2025, https://www.cfschools.org/schools/orchard-hill/blog/2025/10/22/6939-temperature-guidelines ; Aldrich Elementary, Recess Temperature Guidelines, 12 October 2022, https://www.cfschools.org/schools/aldrich/blog/2022/10/12/5429-recess-temperature-guidelines ); Twin Lakes Elementary of Minnesota’s district 728, Outside Recess Procedures (https://tles.isd728.org/families/outside-recess-procedures ); Howe Montessori and Center Based Education of Dearborn Public Schools, Michigan, Fall and Winter Weather, 16 October 2024 (https://howe.dearbornschools.org/2024/10/16/fall-winter-weather/ ); Avon Grove Charter School, Pennsylvania, Winter Recess Guidelines (https://www.agcharter.org/departments/health-services/winter-recess-guidelines ); Bismarck Public Schools, North Dakota, Weather Policies (https://www.bismarckschools.org/district-info/frequently-requested-policies/weather-policies ); Forest Grove Elementary of Hudsonville Public Schools, Michigan, Winter Weather Wear (https://www.hudsonvillepublicschools.org/forestgrove/winter-weather-wear ); and Fredericksburg Elementary of Sumner-Fredericksburg Schools, Iowa, Weather Guidelines for Chilly and Cold Weather, 7 October 2025 (https://www.sfcougars.org/o/sffe/article/2470001 ); the organizers of the Austin Marathon, Running in Different Weather Conditions: A Detailed Guide (https://youraustinmarathon.com/running-in-different-weather-conditions-a-detailed-guide/ ); Odyssey House, a New York charity, its running team’s weekly, A runner’s guide to layering (https://odysseyhousenyc.org/rfyl-weekly-a-runners-guide-to-layering-2/ ), which credits its tips to NBC News; a cycling coach’s article, Fine-Tuning Your Clothing Choices for Fun Fall Cycling, by a coach of Carmichael Training Systems, in the copy a cycling club’s site hosts (https://images.clubexpress.com/778568/attach/4299573_1_Cold_Cycling.pdf ); Visit West Iceland, the regional tourist office, July (https://www.west.is/en/moya/extras/1/july ), which gives the month’s average as 11 degrees Celsius or 51.8 Fahrenheit; the National Park Service, Glacier Bay National Park, Weather (https://www.nps.gov/glba/planyourvisit/weather.htm ); and the National Park Service, Redwood National and State Parks, Weather (https://www.nps.gov/redw/planyourvisit/weather.htm ). Temperatures are in degrees Fahrenheit and each band is the publisher’s own; the Celsius figures in the copy are arithmetic. The school charts are written for children at recess and are used here because schools are among the few bodies that publish a rule for an ordinary day at a given temperature; three of the nine are schools of one Iowa district. Nobody sets a rule for the weather: these are published guides, each for its own purpose. Left out on purpose: brand and shop names, prices, and advice on health. Licence: own work
How it works
What should I wear in 50 degree weather? A light jacket or sweatshirt over long sleeves, with long pants. These 50 things follow nine school recess charts, a marathon organizer, a running team, a cycling coach, a tourist office and two national parks.

Is 50 degrees jacket weather? What nine school charts say
Nobody sets a dress code for the weather, but schools must decide what a child wears outside, and they publish it. Of nine recess charts read here, eight ask for long sleeves, a jacket or both between 50 and 60 degrees. Four switch to a coat below 50, and a fifth asks for a coat or another layer from 54 down. Five of the nine go by the feels-like reading, not the thermometer, so wind moves the line. Fifty degrees Fahrenheit is 10 degrees Celsius, and 55 is about 13.
Dress for the coldest hour you will be outside, not for the day’s high.
Questions and answers
What should I wear in 55 degree weather?
Much the same, one layer lighter. An Iowa school asks only for a long-sleeved top from 55 to 60 degrees, and a marathon organizer’s chart drops the jacket and the full-length tights at 55 for a long-sleeved shirt with shorts or capris.
Can I wear shorts in 50 degree weather?
On a run, yes: a charity’s running team suggests shorts or capris with long sleeves for 40 to 50 degrees. Standing about, less so: an Iowa school bars shorts at recess up to 54, and a Pennsylvania school recommends long pants below 50.
What should I wear in 50 degree rain?
The same layers under a shell. An Alaska national park whose summer highs run from 50 to 60 calls good rain gear essential, an Icelandic tourist office packs a rainproof jacket and pants, and a cycling coach carries a plastic rain jacket at any temperature.
