How this list was compiled
The 54 things to wear or to leave at home, and the line under each, were written for this page on 2026-10-13; no list was copied. Each row follows a venue’s or festival’s own page, or one of two concert guides, read on 2026-10-13. Venues: Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Colorado, a venue owned by the City and County of Denver (https://www.redrocksonline.com/plan-your-visit/faq/ ); the Hollywood Bowl, Los Angeles (https://www.hollywoodbowl.com/visit/visit-faq ); the Gorge Amphitheatre, Washington (https://www.gorgeamphitheatre.com/faq ); the Deer Valley Music Festival, Utah, in its welcome guide (https://deervalleymusicfestival.org/plan-your-visit/welcome-guide/ ); Tanglewood, Massachusetts, in its policies (https://www.bso.org/tanglewood/visit/when-you-are-here/policies-and-information ); the Santa Barbara Bowl, California (https://sbbowl.com/policies/ ); Under the K Bridge Park, Brooklyn (https://www.underthekbridge.org/kbyg-faq/ ); Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, a festival in a San Francisco park (https://hardlystrictlybluegrass.com/info-faq-2026/ ); Brooklyn Paramount, an indoor theater (https://www.brooklynparamount.com/visit ); Punk Rock Bowling, a punk festival, in the entry rules of one of its shows (https://punkrockbowling.com/fight-to-unite/ ); Carnegie Hall, New York (https://www.carnegiehall.org/Visit/Carnegie-Hall-FAQs ); and the Madison Symphony Orchestra, Wisconsin (https://madisonsymphony.org/concerts-events/customer-service/faqs/ ). Guides: Ticketmaster, a ticket seller, Outdoor concerts: a fan guide (https://blog.ticketmaster.com/outdoor-concert-guide/ ), and Concerts Under the Stars, a concert series, What to wear to an outdoor concert (https://seeyouunderthestars.com/what-to-wear-under-the-stars/ ). A venue’s own page comes first: its rules on bags, umbrellas and banned items differ from the next one’s. Things to carry are on the page What should I take to a concert and are not repeated here. Left out on purpose: brands, shops, prices, anything about body shape, and the names of performers. Licence: own work
How it works
What should I wear to an outdoor concert? Comfortable clothes in layers, shoes you can stand and walk in, and a jacket for after sunset. These 54 things follow twelve venues’ and festivals’ own pages and two concert guides.

Venues talk about weather and ground, not fashion
The venues read say little about style and a lot about where you will be: under full sun, in wind after dark, on a dirt path or a steep slope. One test from a concert series’ guide covers every pair of shoes: if you cannot stand and walk in them for an hour at home, leave them there.
Questions and answers
Is there a dress code at an outdoor concert?
Rarely more than the basics. A Los Angeles amphitheater calls its code casual and asks only for no bare feet. A Massachusetts festival requires a shirt everywhere on its grounds, and shoes only inside its halls and food venues.
What should a guy wear to a concert?
A concert series’ guide gives one outfit for most outdoor shows: well-fitting jeans or chinos, a button-down shirt, a light jacket or blazer, and leather shoes, boots or clean sneakers. For a warm afternoon it swaps in a polo and loafers.
What should I wear to a punk concert?
Black jeans, a band T-shirt, a leather or denim jacket and boots: the rock show outfit in one concert series’ guide. A punk festival’s entry rules allow studs but turn away spiked jewelry and large chains, and two other venues ban spikes.
What should I wear to an outdoor concert in the rain?
A rain jacket or a poncho. Several of the venues read play rain or shine and ban umbrellas; one says they block the view. A Utah mountain venue differs and says an umbrella may come in handy.
