How this list was compiled

The 51 things to wear or to leave at home, and the line under each, were written for this page on 2026-10-13; no list was copied. Each row follows one of three guides for shower guests, read on 2026-10-13: The Knot, a wedding planning company, A guest's guide to what to wear to a bridal shower (https://www.theknot.com/content/what-to-wear-to-a-bridal-shower); Zola, a wedding registry and planning company, What to wear to a bridal shower as a guest (https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/what-to-wear-to-a-bridal-shower); Brides, a bridal magazine, What to wear to a bridal shower as a guest, which quotes a bridal fashion designer (https://www.brides.com/what-to-wear-to-a-bridal-shower-5072568). These are publishers' guides, not rules: the hosts and the invitation decide, so ask the host when you are unsure. The guides' shopping lists were not used. Left out on purpose: brands, shops, prices and anything about body shape. Licence: own work

How it works

What should I wear to a wedding shower? Dress as for a nice brunch: a day dress, a jumpsuit or a blouse with trousers, and leave white to the bride. These 51 things follow three wedding publishers’ guest guides.

Why white is left to the bride

All three guides rule out white for guests. A registry company’s guide gives the reason: the bride often wears white to her own shower, and a guest should not seem to compete for her spotlight. The rest is reading the invitation. The registry guide says that spelled-out numbers, or a phrase such as request the pleasure of your company, point to a formal shower, and that a shower at a private home is not always casual, so ask the host. A bridal designer ranks venues from least to most formal: backyard, country club, restaurant.

  • Still unsure? Text another guest and compare notes, as a bridal designer suggests in a bridal magazine.

Questions and answers

What should a guest wear to a bridal shower?

The same clothes. A wedding planning company’s guide uses both names for the one party and sums the dress up as anything you would wear to an elevated daytime date, such as a matinee: polished, modest and right for daytime.

Can you wear black to a wedding shower?

One guide says no. A registry company calls black a bit too somber for a festive daytime party and suggests a softer gray or navy. The planning company’s guide and the bridal magazine name only white as a color to avoid.

Can you wear jeans to a wedding shower?

The guides differ. A wedding planning company lists jeans with sneakers and athleisure as too casual. A registry company puts nice jeans with a floral top on its list for a casual shower, and dark jeans with a blouse for a backyard one.

What should a man wear to a wedding shower?

A wedding planning company’s guide says to aim for a smart office look. A casual suit is fine if it suits the party, but a blazer with dress pants is as formal as a shower needs. Add a belt.
