How formal is a wedding on sand

A wedding planner quoted in a bridal magazine says you dress to the formality of the event, as at any wedding, with small changes to fabric and accessories. A wedding planning company’s guide gives two clues when the invitation is vague: a beach wedding held in the evening is usually dressier than one at noon, and one at a resort or a club dressier than one right on the sand.

  • Look up the venue first: a registry guide says it shows how formal the day will be and what you will walk on.

Questions and answers

What should I wear to a wedding on the beach if there is no dress code?

Dress for semi-formal, a wedding planner advises in a bridal magazine, since overdressed is better than underdressed. That means a tea-length or maxi dress, or dress pants with a button-down shirt and closed-toe loafers.

Can you wear black to a beach wedding?

The guides lean against it. A Florida beach wedding company calls dark or all-black outfits too somber for the setting, and a planning company’s guide tells men to pick a blue or tan suit over a black one.

What does beach formal mean?

A formal wedding dressed for the coast: a suit in linen or seersucker with a tie and dress shoes, or a long dress, a tea-length dress or a jumpsuit with wedges or block heels.

Can I wear a hat to a beach wedding?

The guides differ. A bridal magazine’s guide allows sun hats if they come off during the procession. A registry company’s outfit guide lists large-brimmed hats among the extras to limit at a casual beach wedding unless the hosts say otherwise.
