Both lips, every time

B closes both lips, then opens them with the voice on. The end chip is the hardest to hear, because a final B is short: say "A web, a knob, a cab, a club." and let each B pop softly, without an extra uh after it.

B against V

V uses the top teeth on the bottom lip; B uses both lips. In Spanish, b and v spell the same sound, so Spanish speakers often find this chip the hardest. Say "Vera baked very big vanilla buns." slowly, and check the teeth touch the lip on every V.

What are good tongue twisters with B?

Lines with B in the same place in each word. For the start, try "Bella's beagle barked at the bouncing ball." For blends, try "Blanche blew bright blue bubbles." Each of the four chips holds nine lines.

Why do some people say B for V?

Some languages, Spanish among them, have no separate V sound, so learners use one sound for both letters. The last chip on this page sets the two side by side to practise the switch.
