Fruit, vegetables and meals
Fruit and vegetables has 12 riddles, from the tomatoes that ketchup to the peach stone with a colonel. Meals and the kitchen has 13, such as the age served for breakfast. Word play marks the 16 whose answer turns on a sound.
Where they come from
Every riddle is in an old riddle book printed in 1900 or 1915, free to read at Project Gutenberg and named under the full list. We told each one again in plain words and kept its answer.

Questions and answers
What is a good food riddle for kids?
"A bird sits on a peach you want. How do you get the peach without scaring the bird?" The answer is to wait until it flies off. It needs no word play, so young children get it.
Why are some answers in brackets?
The brackets give the word the answer sounds like: a toe-martyr is a tomato, and a colonel is a kernel. Say the answer aloud and the joke lands.
