Random cities in Missouri, county by county
Eighty-six of the state's municipalities have most of their people in St. Louis County, almost four times as many as in Jasper County, next with 22. Kansas City's card says mostly in Jackson County, since the city reaches into Clay, Platte and Cass Counties. The County list names the 80 with the largest places; St. Louis city is one.
Sixteen names that belong to another county
Ozark is in Christian County, not Ozark County. Jackson is in Cape Girardeau County and Washington in Franklin County. The cards also hold a Mexico, a Cuba, a Lebanon, a California and a Nevada, each a Missouri city.
- Rogersville, mostly in Webster County, grew by nearly half between 2020 and 2025, the fastest of any place that began with 1,000 people.
Questions and answers
How many cities are in Missouri?
Missouri has 936 municipalities in the Census Bureau's 2025 estimates: 643 cities, 104 towns and 189 villages. Each card gives its place's rank among all 936.
Is St. Louis in St. Louis County?
No. The city voted in 1876 to leave the county and became an independent city in 1877, so its card names no county. St. Louis County's own municipalities, Florissant and Chesterfield among them, are separate places.
What is the smallest town in Missouri?
Friedenswald, a village in Camden County, has three people in the 2025 estimates, and Corning in Holt County has none. Places that small have no card: the list stops at 250 people, which leaves off 327 of the 936.
What are the largest cities in Missouri?
Kansas City, with 521,220 people, then St. Louis with 278,144, Springfield with 169,847, Columbia with 130,851 and Independence with 121,675. Jefferson City, the capital, is sixteenth with 42,489.
