How it works

This random US county generator holds 670 counties: every one with 100,000 people or more in the Census Bureau's 2025 estimates, plus each state's most and least populous. Loving County, Texas (52 people) is as likely as Los Angeles County.

For a geography quiz or a road-trip game

Each card names the county and its state, then its place by population among all the counties of the state, its county seat and its people in 2025. Choose a state in the Any state dropdown to stay inside it: Texas has 44 counties on the list and Delaware all three of its own. For a quiz, press Hide all details and ask for the county seat before you tap the card.

For county collectors

Counting the counties you have set foot in? Draw five and tick off the ones you know. Names repeat, so the state always prints beside the county: nine Washington Counties are on the list.

Tips
  • Draw two and guess which county has more people before you read the cards.
  • A link ending in #state=ohio opens the page on Ohio's 27 listed counties.

Questions and answers

How many counties are there in the US?

The Census Bureau's 2025 file lists 3,144 counties and county equivalents in the 50 states and the District of Columbia: 2,999 counties, 64 parishes, 41 independent cities, 30 Alaska boroughs and census areas, nine Connecticut planning regions and the District.

Does the list include every county?

Not yet. It holds the 621 counties and county equivalents with 100,000 people or more, plus the most and the least populous of every state, which is how Loving County, Texas and Kalawao County, Hawaii come in.

What is a county equivalent?

An area the Census Bureau counts like a county where a state has none: a Louisiana parish, an Alaska borough or census area, a Connecticut planning region, or an independent city such as Baltimore that sits in no county.

Why do some cards show no county seat?

Because the place has none. Independent cities, Alaska's census areas, Connecticut's planning regions and the five counties of New York City have no county seat, so their cards print the rank and the population alone.

How this list was compiled: 670 rows picked by rule, not by hand, from the US Census Bureau's Vintage 2025 county population estimates (https://www2.census.gov/programs-surveys/popest/datasets/2020-2025/counties/totals/co-est2025-alldata.csv, read 2026-10-01): every county or county equivalent with 100,000 people or more on 1 July 2025 (621 of them, 50 with 1,000,000 or more), plus the most populous and the least populous county of every state and the District of Columbia, so that every state appears. That file holds 3,144 county-level rows (SUMLEV 050) for the 50 states and the District of Columbia: 2,999 counties, 64 Louisiana parishes, 41 independent cities (38 in Virginia, with Baltimore, St. Louis and Carson City), 19 Alaska boroughs and municipalities, 11 Alaska census areas, the 9 planning regions the bureau has used in place of Connecticut's eight old counties since 2022, and the District. The list was planned to hold all of them; the page that prints every row came to 538 KB of HTML, over the 300 KB at which the site's build stops, so the list keeps to the floor until the full list can load on demand. Puerto Rico's municipios are not in that file. The name, the state and the population (the estimate for 1 July 2025) are the file's. The place in the state is computed from the same file over every county of the state, most populous first, so a row can read 12th of 67 although fewer than twelve of that state's counties are listed; areas with the same estimate share the higher place. Regions are the bureau's four regions, from the file's REGION column. County seats are read by script from the county tables of English Wikipedia's state lists (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_counties_in_Alabama and the page of the same name for 46 more states, List_of_parishes_in_Louisiana, List_of_boroughs_and_census_areas_in_Alaska and List_of_cities_and_counties_in_Virginia, read 2026-10-01) and joined to the Census rows by FIPS code, never by name. A row prints the seat as its table does, so a county with two seats prints both; Columbia County, Georgia prints both the seat in law and the seat in practice, as its own article does. A row prints no seat where the table has none: independent cities, census areas, planning regions, the District of Columbia, Alaska's consolidated city-boroughs, the five counties of New York City and Kalawao County in Hawaii.
