This random US city generator holds 174 real cities: the 39 with 500,000 people or more, the three largest in every state, and all 50 state capitals. Say "give me a random city in the US" and Montpelier, Vermont, with 7,823 people, has the same chance as New York City.

Every draw is a random city and state together, because names repeat: the list has three Springfields and seven names that appear twice, Portland and Columbus among them. For a quiz, press Hide all details. The cards keep the city and state and cover the rest, so ask which of five is a state capital, or which is biggest. Olympia is the trap: it is Washington's 24th largest city.

  • Tap a letter, then have everyone name a random city in the US that starts with it before you press. S is the generous one, with 20 cities.
  • Draw two cities and guess which is bigger. The closest call is West Jordan, Utah against Manchester, New Hampshire: six people apart in 2025.
  • For reports, draw one city per student: nothing repeats until all 174 have come up.

Questions and answers

Can I get a random city in Texas or a random city in Ohio?

Yes, from a short list. Choose Texas in the State list and the draw is limited to six cities: Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin and El Paso. Ohio has three: Columbus, Cleveland and Cincinnati. A link ending in #state=texas or #state=ohio opens the page that way. For a smaller Texas or Ohio town, this page cannot help.

Is this random city generator US only?

Yes. It deals a random city in the USA and nothing else: every row is an incorporated place on the Census Bureau's list, plus Washington, D.C. Hawaii has no incorporated cities, so Honolulu is its only card. The list stops at 174, so most small towns are missing.

Where do the populations and counties come from?

Populations are US Census Bureau estimates for 1 July 2025. The county is the one where most of the city's people live: Kansas City, Missouri reaches four counties and New York City fills five. Baltimore, St. Louis, Carson City and Virginia's cities sit in no county.

How this list was compiled: 174 rows picked by rule, not by hand, from the US Census Bureau's Vintage 2025 City and Town Population Totals (https://www2.census.gov/programs-surveys/popest/datasets/2020-2025/cities/totals/sub-est2025.csv, checked 2026-09-18): every incorporated place with 500,000 people or more on 1 July 2025 (39 places), the three largest places in every state, and every state capital. That file holds 19,483 incorporated places and consolidated cities, 3,224 of them with 10,000 people or more; the toolWish asks for that full import. Populations, the rank in the state and the rank in the US are computed from the same file, and places with the same estimate share the higher rank (Casper, Wyoming and Pocatello, Idaho are both 696th); for consolidated city-counties (Indianapolis, Nashville, Louisville and others) the bureau's 'balance' figure is used. Hawaii has no incorporated places, so the file carries one Hawaii row, Urban Honolulu, and the list has one Hawaii city. Washington, D.C. is included as a city and marked as outside every state. Connecticut's county-level areas are its nine planning regions, which the bureau has used in place of the eight old counties since 2022. A county is named alone when it holds 95% or more of the city's people, and as 'Mostly in' below that; x.counties lists every county the city reaches. The county is the one holding the largest share of the city's people in the file's county-part rows.
