Random Dinosaur Generator: 206 Real Dinosaurs With Facts: how it works
All 206 dinosaurs on this list are real, from Archaeopteryx at about half a metre to Supersaurus at about 35 metres. Press New dinosaurs and five come up. Each card says when the dinosaur lived, what it ate, how long it grew and where it was found. Three rows of chips set a period, a diet and a size, and they work together.
Periods, lengths and chips that combine
The Triassic ran from about 252 to 201 million years ago, the Jurassic from 201 to 143 and the Cretaceous from 143 to 66. Here 136 dinosaurs are Cretaceous, 60 are Jurassic and only 10 are Triassic. A length runs nose to tail and is a best guess from the bones, so every card says about. Tap Jurassic and Meat-eaters together and the draw comes from the 19 Jurassic meat-eaters alone.
A dinosaur randomizer for drawing and guessing
Draw one dinosaur and sketch it from the facts alone. A 9 metre plant-eater named three-horned face gives you plenty to go on. For a guessing game, press Hide all facts, read out a name and ask when it lived and what it ate. Tap a card to check the answer. With ten on screen, line them up from shortest to longest.
Tips
Say a long name in parts: Pachy, cephalo, saurus. Saurus means lizard, and the whole name means thick-headed lizard.
Tap Giants, draw one and pace it out in the playground. Diplodocus is about 26 metres, so count 26 big steps.
Lock a favourite and press again to change the rest. Draw 20 and press Print for a wall chart of names and facts.
Questions and answers
Does the random dinosaur generator only pick real dinosaurs?
Yes. In September 2026 every name was checked against Wikipedia's list of dinosaur names, and all but ten against the Natural History Museum's Dino Directory too. That is why Pteranodon and Mosasaurus are missing: one was a flying reptile, the other a sea lizard. Dinosaurs made up for films and games are left out.
Why does my book give a different length?
Many dinosaurs are known from only part of a skeleton, so experts work a length out from the bones there are and do not always agree. Most cards show the museum's figure, or a range where Wikipedia differs from it by more than about a fifth. Argentinosaurus is known from only a few bones, so its card says about 30 to 35 metres.
Are birds really dinosaurs?
Yes. Scientists class birds as living dinosaurs, the only ones left today. Archaeopteryx, one of the smallest here, had feathers and broad wings back in the Late Jurassic. For the living kind, try the random bird generator.

How this list was compiled: We chose the 206 dinosaurs and wrote every line ourselves. Checked 2026-09-18, and the corrected cards again on 2026-09-19, against two live sources: the Natural History Museum Dino Directory (https://www.nhm.ac.uk/discover/dino-directory/, one page per dinosaur, saved with each item as src) and the English Wikipedia article for the same dinosaur (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ followed by the name, saved as wiki). Every name was also checked against Wikipedia's List of dinosaur genera (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_dinosaur_genera). A period such as Late Cretaceous is shown in full only where both sources agree; where they differ the card gives the period alone. Two cards are exceptions, because the museum page is out of date: Jobaria (Middle Jurassic) and Supersaurus (Late Jurassic) follow their Wikipedia articles, which cite the newer dating of the rocks. Where the two sources gave different countries or name meanings, the card follows the Wikipedia article and its cited paper: Gigantoraptor was found in Inner Mongolia, which is part of China, Torosaurus means perforated lizard and Plateosaurus most likely means broad lizard. Lengths are the museum's figure, or the range in the Wikipedia article where the two were more than about a fifth apart. Ten newer finds that the museum directory does not list were checked against Wikipedia alone. Period dates in the page text follow the International Commission on Stratigraphy chart as quoted on Wikipedia's Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous articles. The 23 dinosaurs with no name meaning on the card carry one other fact instead (x.fact), each read in the genus's English Wikipedia article (the x.wiki address, or x.src where that is the Wikipedia page) on 2026-09-19.
