Maine Coon Long-haired breed, United States. One of the largest domestic breeds, and the official state cat of Maine.
Nebelung Long-haired breed, United States. Like a Russian Blue with longer fur. Its name means creature of the mist.
Norwegian Forest Cat Long-haired breed, Norway. Has a glossy, water-repellent top coat over a woolly undercoat.

Cornish Rex Curly-coated breed, England (Cornwall). Its wavy coat is soft down only, with no outer guard hairs.
Devon Rex Curly-coated breed, England (Devon). Traces back to Kirlee, a curly kitten found in Buckfastleigh in 1960.
Donskoy Hairless breed, Russia. Also called the Don Sphynx, yet it is not related to the Sphynx.
LaPerm Curly-coated breed, United States. Traces back to Curly, a farm kitten born in Oregon in the early 1980s.
Lykoi Sparse-coated breed, United States. Patchy fur around the face gives it a wolf-like look, hence werewolf cat.
Peterbald Hairless breed, Russia. Bred in St Petersburg in 1994 by crossing a Donskoy and an Oriental Shorthair.
Selkirk Rex Curly-coated breed, United States. Began with one curly kitten born to a rescued cat in Montana in 1987.
Sphynx Hairless breed, Canada. Began with Prune, a hairless kitten born in Toronto in 1966.

African wildcat Wild cat, Africa, West and Central Asia. The ancestor of the domestic cat, tamed about 10,000 years ago.
Black-footed cat Wild cat, southern Africa. Africa's smallest wild cat. It is black only under its feet.
Bobcat Wild cat, southern Canada to Mexico. Named for its stubby, black-tipped tail, which looks bobbed.
Canada lynx Wild cat, Alaska, Canada and the northern United States. Relies mostly on the snowshoe hare for food.
Caracal Wild cat, Africa, the Middle East and on to India. Has long tufted ears and can catch birds in midair.
Cheetah Wild cat, Africa and central Iran. The fastest land animal, with black tear-like streaks down its face.
Clouded leopard Wild cat, Himalayan foothills to South China. Can climb down a vertical tree trunk head first.
Cougar Wild cat, Americas. Also called puma or mountain lion. It ranges from Canada to Patagonia.
Eurasian lynx Wild cat, Europe to Central Asia and Siberia. The biggest of the four kinds of lynx.
European wildcat Wild cat, mainland Europe, Scotland, Turkey and the Caucasus. A forest cat with a bushy, black-tipped tail.
Fishing cat Wild cat, South and Southeast Asia. Lives by wetlands, eats mostly fish and can swim underwater.
Jaguar Wild cat, Americas. The biggest cat of the Americas and third biggest worldwide.
Jungle cat Wild cat, eastern Mediterranean to Southeast Asia. Also called the swamp cat, as it lives mostly in wetlands.
Leopard Wild cat, Africa and Asia. Its dark spots are grouped into rings called rosettes.
Leopard cat Wild cat, South, Southeast and East Asia. Roughly as big as a house cat, with webs between its toes.
Lion Wild cat, sub-Saharan Africa and India. A social cat that lives in groups called prides.
Ocelot Wild cat, south-western United States to South America. A spotted cat that climbs, leaps and swims well.
Pallas's cat Wild cat, Central Asia. Also called the manul. It has long, dense light grey fur and low-set round ears.
Sand cat Wild cat, deserts of North Africa, Arabia and Central Asia. Long hair under its paws insulates the pads.
Serval Wild cat, Africa south of the Sahara. For its body size, no cat has longer legs.
Snow leopard Wild cat, mountains of Asia. Broad paws and a thick tail help it live in cold, high mountains.
Tiger Wild cat, Asia. Has orange fur with black, mostly vertical stripes, and hunts by ambush.

The list of breeds The International Cat Association accepts for championship was taken from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_International_Cat_Association, read on 2026-09-19, which cites tica.org as of November 2024. Every breed here is on at least one of the two lists; x.registry says which. Long-haired and short-haired twins that a registry lists separately are folded into one entry. The Tennessee Rex is left out because its status on that list could not be confirmed. Origin and coat were checked against the table at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cat_breeds and the breed's own English Wikipedia article (saved with each item as wiki); each fact line was checked against that article. The Minuet carries no origin because only one source gave it, and the Oriental Longhair takes its origin from the Oriental Shorthair article, which says the two differ only in coat length. Coat first, then where the breed began

The first words give the coat: short-haired, long-haired, curly-coated, wiry-coated, sparse-coated or hairless. Coat and From buttons, under More filters, work together: Long-haired with From Asia leaves four breeds, the Persian among them. Nine breeds, the Manx and the Munchkin among them, come in both lengths and come up under both coats. The full list prints each once, under Short-haired.

A cat randomizer for breeds, wild cats or both

Choose Wild cats to meet the species behind three hybrid breeds: the leopard cat behind the Bengal, the jungle cat behind the Chausie and the serval behind the Savannah. Wild cats have no coat or From group, so leave those on Any coat and Anywhere. The cards are not advice on choosing or keeping a cat.

Questions and answers

Which breeds does the random cat breed generator include?

The 63 that the CFA or TICA accepts for championship shows: 41 on both lists, 18 on TICA's alone, four on CFA's alone. CFA's list was read on its own site in September 2026. TICA's comes from Wikipedia, which cites TICA as of November 2024.

Why is there no tabby or calico cat?

Neither is a breed. Tabby is a coat pattern, with an M shape on the forehead, and calico is a three-colour coat of black, red and white. Both turn up in many breeds, and most house cats have no pedigree at all.

Are the wild cats real species?

Yes, all 22 are living species, from the snow leopard to the black-footed cat, the smallest wild cat in Africa. Each was checked against its Wikipedia article. The random animal generator draws wild animals of every kind.
