Random Shape Generator: 2D and 3D Shapes With a Drawing: how it works

Press New shape and one comes up with its drawing: a rhombus, a heptagon, a cone. The list holds 66 shapes, 46 flat and 20 solid, and each card gives the sides, or the faces, edges and corners. The First shapes chip keeps to 22 everyday shapes we picked for young learners.

Give me a random shape to draw

Artists use the draw as a warm-up. Tap 3D shapes for the forms most objects are built from: cube, cylinder, cone and sphere. The short broken lines on a solid are its hidden edges, the ones you would see through glass. For character work, draw 3 and build one figure: a trapezoid body, a circle head, a crescent tail.

How sides, faces and corners are counted

A polygon has straight sides only, so the circle, heart and crescent are shapes but not polygons. For a star, arrow or cross the card counts the outline: a five-pointed star has 10 sides, not 5. On a solid, a face is flat, an edge is where two faces meet and a corner is where edges meet. Test any straight-edged solid: faces plus corners equals edges plus 2. A cube gives 6 + 8 = 12 + 2.

Tips

  • Shape hunt: tap First shapes and give the class two minutes to find the shape in the room. A clock is a circle, a glue stick is a cylinder.
  • Counting quiz: tap Hide all facts, draw a shape and let the class count the sides on the drawing. Show fact checks the answer.
  • Long polygon names are Greek numbers stuck together. Hepta is 7 and deca is 10, so a heptadecagon has 17 sides.

Which shapes are in the list?

66 shapes: 46 in 2D and 20 in 3D. The flat set has 7 triangles, 8 quadrilaterals, every polygon from 5 to 20 sides, the 100, 1,000 and 10,000-sided ones, and 12 curved or everyday shapes. The solids are 7 round ones, 6 prisms, 4 pyramids, the octahedron, the dodecahedron and the icosahedron.

Can I use it as a shape randomizer for a class game?

Yes. Tap First shapes and press once a turn. For shape bingo, each child draws nine of the 22 first shapes in a 3 by 3 grid and crosses off each one that comes up. No shape returns until all 22 have been seen. Rows combine: First shapes with 3D shapes leaves the 6 first solids.

Does this random shape generator make blobs or patterns?

No. Every result is a named shape from geometry, drawn the same way each time. For an abstract shape, draw 3 and overlap them on paper: a kite, a semicircle and a hexagon cross in an outline nobody has named.

  • Acute triangle All 3 angles are smaller than a right angle, so each one is less than 90 degrees.
  • Annulus A flat ring: the space between two circles that share a center.
  • Arrow A block arrow has 7 sides and 7 corners.
  • Chiliagon 1,000 sides. The drawing shows a circle, because no screen can show the corners.
  • Circle No straight sides and no corners. Every point on the edge is the same distance from the center.
  • Crescent 2 curved edges that meet at 2 points, like a circle with a round bite taken out.
  • Cross A plus-sign outline has 12 sides and 12 corners.
  • Dart A kite pushed inward: 4 sides, with one inside angle bigger than 180 degrees.
  • Decagon 10 sides. In a regular decagon every angle is 144 degrees.
  • Dodecagon 12 sides. In a regular dodecagon every angle is 150 degrees.
  • Ellipse A circle stretched evenly in one direction. It has no corners.

  • Heart 2 round bumps on top and 1 point at the bottom. It has curved sides, so it is not a polygon.
  • Hectogon 100 sides. Drawn this small, it is hard to tell from a circle.
  • Hendecagon 11 sides. In a regular hendecagon every angle is about 147.3 degrees.
  • Heptadecagon 17 sides. In 1796 Gauss showed a regular one can be drawn with only a compass and a straight edge.
  • Heptagon 7 sides. In a regular heptagon every angle is about 128.6 degrees.
  • Hexagon 6 sides. In a regular hexagon every angle is 120 degrees.
  • Hexakaidecagon 16 sides, also called a hexadecagon. In a regular one every angle is 157.5 degrees.
  • Icosagon 20 sides. In a regular icosagon every angle is 162 degrees.
  • Isosceles triangle 2 equal sides and 2 equal angles.
  • Kite 4 sides in two equal pairs that sit next to each other.
  • Myriagon 10,000 sides. It is still a polygon, because every side is straight.
  • Nonagon 9 sides. In a regular nonagon every angle is 140 degrees.
  • Obtuse triangle One of its 3 angles is wider than a right angle, so it is more than 90 degrees.
  • Octagon 8 sides. A stop sign is a regular octagon, with angles of 135 degrees.
  • Octakaidecagon 18 sides, also called an octadecagon. In a regular one every angle is 160 degrees.
  • Oval An egg-like curve with no corners, often wider at one end.
  • Parallelogram 4 sides. Opposite sides are parallel and the same length.
  • Pentadecagon 15 sides. In a regular pentadecagon every angle is 156 degrees.
  • Pentagon 5 sides. In a regular pentagon every angle is 108 degrees.
  • Pentagram A star drawn with 5 straight strokes that cross. It is called a complex polygon.
  • Quadrilateral Any shape with 4 straight sides. Its four angles add up to 360 degrees.
  • Rectangle 4 sides and 4 right angles. Opposite sides are the same length.
  • Rhombus 4 equal sides, often called a diamond. Its diagonals cross at right angles.
  • Right triangle One of its 3 angles is a right angle, exactly 90 degrees.
  • Scalene triangle 3 sides, all of different lengths, and 3 different angles.
  • Sector A pie slice of a circle: 2 straight edges and 1 curved edge.
  • Semicircle Half a circle: one curved edge and one straight edge.
  • Square 4 equal sides and 4 right angles. Tipped onto one corner it is still a square.
  • Star A five-pointed star outline has 10 sides and 10 corners: 5 point out and 5 point in.
  • Tetrakaidecagon 14 sides, also called a tetradecagon. In a regular one every angle is about 154.3 degrees.
  • Trapezoid 4 sides with one pair of parallel sides. In the UK it is called a trapezium.
  • Triangle 3 sides and 3 corners. Its three angles always add up to 180 degrees.
