Questions and answers

What was the first farm animal?

The goat was one of the first, domesticated in Iran around 10,000 years ago. Chickens followed about 8,000 years ago, and horses around 4000 BCE in Central Asia.

Why are camels, llamas and reindeer on the list?

They are farm animals in other parts of the world: llamas and alpacas in the Andes, camels in the deserts and steppes, reindeer in the far north. The list is not just the animals of one country.

Where do the facts come from?

Each line is ours, written from the opening of the animal's English Wikipedia article, read on 24 September 2026. Figures such as the 1.2 billion sheep counted in 2019 are that article's own, as it gives them.

Dromedary camel The one-humped camel, tallest of the three camel species.
