One card at a time: a shade, a tall swatch, its hex code and a line on what the name means. Thirty of the 50 colors in this random hair color generator are natural shades and twelve are dyed colors such as teal. Ten are two-tone, from ombré to natural salt and pepper, and their swatches show both colors.

How the natural shades are sorted

Anthropologists grade hair on the Fischer-Saller scale. A is very light blond, B through E light blond, F through L blond, M through O dark blond, P through T light brown to brown and U to Y dark brown to black. Reds are I to IV and red-blonds V to VI. The scale has letters, not names, so putting honey blond in M to O is our call.

Choosing a dye color with it

Choose Dyed and fantasy colors in the list and draw three. Check what your favorite needs. Semi-permanent dye cannot lighten hair. Vivid shades such as fuchsia come out true only on light blond, so darker hair is bleached first, and bleaching is permanent. A cut to go with it is on the random hairstyle page.

Writers: skip plain brown. Mousy, caramel and deepest brunette are all brown, and each one tells the reader something different.
For a believable crowd, choose Natural hair colors and lean dark. Black is the world's most common hair color, brown is second and red is the rarest.
Drawing the hair? Use the hex as the middle value, then mix a lighter and a darker strand color. One flat color across a whole head looks unnatural.

Questions and answers

What is the rarest natural hair color?

Red. Wikipedia's article on red hair calls it the rarest natural hair color in humans, found in 2 to 6 in 100 people of Northwestern European ancestry and in fewer elsewhere. On this page every card has the same chance, so auburn comes up as often as jet black.

Why is gray on the natural list when blue is not?

Gray and white are natural, though neither is a pigment: hair that loses its melanin looks gray or white by reflected light. Blue does not occur in human hair pigment at all. Black hair can be dark enough to show a blue luster, and that is the Blue-black card.

Are the hex codes official?

No. The Fischer-Saller scale is letters, not screen colors, and we found no standard that gives a hair color a hex code. Each one is an approximation that fits the description, so that a swatch can be shown. For more named colors with hex codes, try the random color name page.
