Names from the show colors

Mink, Lilac, Cocoa, Russian Blue and Amber are real colors a rat may be shown in, as a national fancy rat society lists them.

Questions and answers

What is a good name for a pet rat?

A good rat name comes from the coat. Hoodie and Balaclava suit a hooded rat, Spats and Shirtfront a berkshire, Rice Grain a white rat and Barn Brown an agouti, whose hairs are banded with more than one color.

What are good names for two pet rats?

The pairs group prints two names on one card: Nook & Cranny, Odds & Ends, Scurry & Scamper, Needle & Thread, Dilly & Dally. Press again for five more pairs.

What do you name a white rat?

Try Rice Grain, Cotton Swab, Polar Cap or Flour Bag. Pink-Eyed White is on the list too: it is one of the recognized show colors, an all-white rat with pink eyes.

Are these the names of rats from films and books?

Not on purpose. We wrote the names, cut any that stand in Wikipedia's list of fictional rodents, and left out the rats and mice of well-known films and books by hand.

How this list was compiled: Own list of 167 names for a pet rat, made on 3 October 2026. The groups follow the varieties rats are shown in: the markings, coats, ear type and colors are described from the American Fancy Rat and Mouse Association's page of rat varieties (https://www.afrma.org/fancyrm.htm) and from English Wikipedia's article Fancy rat (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fancy_rat, CC BY-SA 4.0), both read on 3 October 2026. The other names and every line are ours. In the last group one card holds two names, for a pair of rats. A name we wrote was left out when it stands on this site's lists of pet, dog, cat, horse, fish or teddy bear names or on another animal's name page, or appears in Wikipedia's List of fictional rodents as read that day; the rats and mice of well-known films and books were also left out by hand. 45 of the 167 names (27 in 100) also stand on another list of this site, most of them show colors.
