How rolling three dice works here

Each die is its own draw from 1 to 6, so no die looks at the others or at the last roll. Add the three faces for your total. After the first roll, How many changes the number of dice, from 1 to 20.

Most common results from a 3d6 dice roll

Three dice land in 6 × 6 × 6 = 216 ordered ways: a 1, a 2 and a 3 count as six of them. The totals 10 and 11 are the most common, with 27 ways each, or 12.5%. 3 and 18 are the rarest, one way each. Totals the same distance from 10.5 match: 9 and 12 both have 25 ways. The table under the tool lists all sixteen totals.

Questions and answers

What is the most common total when you roll 3 dice?

10 and 11. Each is made by 27 of the 216 ordered rolls, a chance of 1 in 8, or 12.5%. Together they come up a quarter of the time.

How many outcomes are there with three dice?

216 when order counts, because 6 × 6 × 6 = 216. Ignore the order and there are 56 different sets of faces, which make 16 different totals, 3 to 18.

What is the chance of three of a kind?

Six of the 216 rolls show three matching faces, 1-1-1 to 6-6-6. That is 1 in 36, about 2.78%. One named triple, such as three sixes, is 1 in 216.

Is this three dice roll fair?

Yes. Every face of every die has the same chance, and the roll is made in your browser when you press. It is meant for games and lessons, not for anything with money on it.

How this list was compiled

Arithmetic, made by script and never typed: the script lists all 6 x 6 x 6 = 216 ordered rolls of three six-sided dice (a 1, a 2 and a 3 count as six rolls, one for each order) and counts the rolls that make each total from 3 to 18. Checked by the same script: the 16 counts add up to 216, they mirror each other round 10.5 (3 and 18, 4 and 17, and so on), and 10 and 11 share the largest count, 27. Every roll is taken as equally likely, which is what a fair die means: Wikipedia, Dice, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dice , read 2026-09-30 ("showing a random integer from one to six on its upper surface, with each value being equally likely").
