How it works

Lost the color die from a board game? This colored dice roller shows one of six faces as a color tile with its name. Every face has the same 1 in 6 chance, and a color can come up twice in a row.

Games for a color die

Board path: move to the next square of the color you roll. Building: add one brick or bead of that color. Color hunt: touch something in the room that matches before the next roll. Coloring: fill one part of a picture with the color, and stop when the picture is full. For a game with two color dice, roll twice.

Tips
  • No board? Take turns rolling and name one thing of that color before the other player counts to five.

Questions and answers

What colors are on this color die?

Red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple, one face each. If the die in your game has another color, agree which face stands in for it before you start.

How can a color die help a child learn colors?

Roll, say the name of the color together, then find it: a crayon, a block, something in the room. The tile shows the color beside its word, so a child who cannot read yet can still match it.

Can the same color come up twice in a row?

Yes. Every roll is separate, as with a real die, so each color has a 1 in 6 chance each time, whatever came before.

Can I roll two color dice?

Press twice, once for each die. The two rolls are separate, so they can show the same color, as two real dice can.

How this list was compiled

Own work: the six faces of a color die, red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple, one each. The six names are plain color words. The hex values were chosen by eye so that each tile reads as its name on a light and on a dark page; they are not taken from any standard. The three things named on each face are ones that are that color in plain daylight (a ripe strawberry is red, a lime is green); nothing else is claimed about them. Every roll gives each face the same chance, 1 in 6, and a face can come up twice in a row, as on a real die. Licence: own work
