Sh hides in other spellings

The middle chip is where the spelling lies. Ocean, motion, special, sugar, sure and machine all hold the sh sound with no s and h in sight. Say "The musician's patient passion was sure to show." slowly and count five sh sounds before the last word.

Sh against ch

Sh is a long, smooth sound you can hold; ch starts with a stop, like a t, and ends in sh. The last chip puts them side by side, as in "Choose the shoes, then chase the shuttle." If ch turns into sh, slow down and tap each ch.

Questions and answers

What are good sh tongue twisters?

Lines that repeat sh in one place in the word. For the start, try "Sharp shears shaped the shaggy shrub." For the end, try "Swish, swash, a squash in the wash." Each chip holds nine lines.

Why do some sh words have no sh in them?

English spells the sound many ways: ti in motion, ci in special, ce in ocean, ch in machine, s in sugar and sure. The words to stress under each line in the middle chip name them.

Are these the famous sea shell lines?

No. Every line here was written for this site, and none of the well-known published twisters is on the page. None of the lines appears on the site's other tongue twister pages either.

How this list was compiled: Written for this site in September 2026: all 36 tongue twisters are our own wording, and none is copied or reworded from a published collection. Checked by script against every other tongue twister page on this site (no line on two pages and no run of five words shared by two lines) and against the key phrases of about 75 well-known published twisters, none of which appears. The words-to-stress line under each twister is worked out from the twister itself: the words spelled with the chip's sound (sh at the start, in the middle or at the end, or sh and ch).
