    Shifter of the day

    How it works

This shifter name generator makes up a shapeshifter for a story or a game: a first name, an invented surname such as Briarplume, the real animal the person turns into and the small habit that gives the secret away.

    Read the full guide

Name the shifter, then choose the animal

Press New shifter name. Keep a surname such as Marshmane and press for a whole family, each with a different animal, or keep the animal and press until the name suits it.

One true fact for every animal

The list below gives a line about each animal from its Wikipedia article: the stoat is called an ermine in its white winter coat, and the sea otter has the densest fur in the animal kingdom. Use it for how the shifter looks, moves or hides.

    Questions and answers

    What is a shifter?

A shifter, or shapeshifter, is a person or creature that can change shape. In fantasy stories the word usually means someone who turns into one animal and back, as the people this page names do.

Can I use this as a werebear name generator?

Yes. Press until the animal is a brown bear, a black bear or a polar bear, keep it, then press again: every name that follows belongs to a bear shifter.

What animals can a shifter turn into?

Any animal, in stories. This page deals real ones, from the lynx and the raven to the orca and the pine marten, and gives one fact about each.

    Are the surnames real?

No. Each joins a color or weather word to a word for a coat, such as hackle, ruff or plume. Each was searched on Wikipedia and on fan wikis and dropped on a match.
