Why the list is short
A name is listed only when its Wiktionary etymology and its English Wikipedia name article give the same meaning and the same origin. 1,308 names were checked and 102 passed. Names built from two parts, such as Albert and Edmund, are left out, because one word cannot stand for both parts.
Pick an origin
The names come from Hebrew, Greek, Latin, Germanic languages, Arabic, Sanskrit and Celtic languages, with French, Persian and Slavic ones under Other languages. Each card also says whether the name is given to girls, to boys or to both.
A meaning is the old word behind a name, as the dictionary glosses it: Sophia is Greek for wisdom.
Questions and answers
What names mean light?
On this list Noor, from Arabic, and Luci, from Latin, mean light, and Uriah, from Hebrew, means God is my light. Each card carries the meaning in quotation marks as the dictionary gives it.
What names mean star?
Esther and Akhtar both carry the meaning star here, and both are filed under Other languages because the sources trace them to Persian.
Where do the meanings come from?
From the etymology in the name's English Wiktionary entry, checked against the meaning in the fact box of its English Wikipedia name article, both read on 3 October 2026. No baby-name website was used.
Why is my name not on the list?
Most names fail the check. A name is left out when only one source gives a meaning, when the two word it differently, or when the article calls the meaning uncertain. Only 102 of 1,308 names passed.

How this list was compiled: A list by a written rule, built on 3 October 2026 from two public sources read that day: the English given-name entries of English Wiktionary (https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Category:English_given_names, CC BY-SA 4.0) and the name articles of English Wikipedia that carry a meaning in their fact box (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Given_names, CC BY-SA 4.0). 1,308 one-word names have both an article with a stated meaning and a dictionary entry. A name is listed when (1) the dictionary's etymology glosses the word the name comes from, (2) one of the meanings in the article's fact box says the same thing, word for word once small words are set aside (God, Yahweh and the Lord count as one word), (3) both sources name the same language family of origin, and (4) the article and the entry do not disagree about who the name is given to. 102 names pass. Left out by the rule: names the dictionary builds from two parts (Albert, Edmund), because one gloss cannot stand for both; names whose article calls the meaning unknown or uncertain; and every name where the two sources differ or only one gives a meaning, which is most of them. Left out by our own call: Portia and Connor, whose gloss holds a word we keep off a page children use, and Rosalind, where the dictionary glosses only half of a two-part name. The meaning on a card is the dictionary's gloss; the origin is the family both sources name (Germanic covers Old English, Old Norse and German; Celtic covers Irish, Welsh and Scottish Gaelic; the Other group holds French, Persian, Slavic); girls, boys or both is the article's statement. A meaning is the old word behind a name, not a statement about a person who has it, and many names have other explanations that these two sources do not share. Many meanings name God, and are printed as the dictionary gives them. Single names only, never a real person.
