Formal names and everyday forms
Many Greek names have a formal form and an everyday one. Γεώργιος (Georgios) is the formal form; Γιώργος (Giorgos) is the common one, and its card says which name it comes from. Choose Everyday forms under More filters for 46 of these, Nikos and Voula among them.
What a family-name ending tells
Choose Family names. An ending often points to where a kind of name arose: -akis to Crete, -opoulos to the Peloponnese, -ou to Cyprus. 26 of the 91 family names end in -opoulos. A woman's family name is usually the genitive: Mr. Papadopoulos, Mrs. Papadopoulou.
Tips
For one random Greek name, take a given name and a family name from two draws; the given name goes first.
Latin spellings follow the ELOT 743 standard: Αικατερίνη is Aikaterini, and the card adds Catherine as the English form.
Sokratis and Athina are under Ancient names: old names that Wikipedia lists among examples of Greek given names.
Questions and answers
Are these real Greek names?
Yes. Each given name has its own entry as a Greek name in Wiktionary and is on Wikipedia's lists of examples, or is a form of one that is. Each family name has a Wikipedia article that lists at least six people.
Is this a list of the most common Greek names?
No. We found no official open file of names for Greece, so there are no ranks and no counts. It is a selection of names that two references document, and some very common names are missing.
Why are there no name days?
Wikipedia's calendar of Greek name days spells many names in ways we could not match to these with certainty, and we had no second source to check the dates. A wrong name day is worse than none.
What does 'pet form' mean on a card?
The dictionary marks the name as a diminutive of a longer one: Nikos of Nikolaos, Voula of Vasiliki. A character can go by the short name while official papers carry the long one.

How this list was compiled: Verify-first step, 2026-09-30: no official open file of names for Greece was found, so this list is a selection and says so; the given names rest on the fallback the plan allows, a name's own English Wiktionary entry stating its language, confirmed for 172 names before any was listed. Given names: the Greek entries in English Wiktionary's categories 'Greek male given names' and 'Greek female given names' (https://en.wiktionary.org, CC BY-SA 4.0, 336 entries with a given-name sense, read 2026-09-30 through the MediaWiki API). A name is listed if its Greek spelling, accents aside, is also among the examples of given names in English Wikipedia's article 'Greek name' (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greek_name, section 'Examples of given names', wiki text read 2026-09-30), or if its Wiktionary entry says it is a pet, common or other form of a name listed that way (Γιώργος, the common form of Γεώργιος). Left out: entries Wiktionary labels as mythology, folklore or historical, one it says is chiefly used for ships, and second accent forms of a name already listed (Αμφιτρίτη, Ανδροκλής, Ανδρομέδα, Αντιγόνη, Κωνσταντῖνος, Προμηθέας, Σιλάς, Μαρκίων). A card gives the sex and the English equivalent from the entry, the name it is a form of where the entry gives one, and which of the article's lists holds it: 'Ancient names' or 'Biblical and Christian names'. The lists are Wikipedia's examples, not a count of how often a name is given. Name days are not printed: the calendar in Wikipedia's 'Name days in Greece' was read (2026-09-30), but its spellings and dates could not be matched to these names with certainty against a second source. Family names: the articles in English Wikipedia's 'Category:Greek-language surnames' (589 articles read 2026-09-30 through the MediaWiki API). A surname is listed if its article's opening calls it a Greek surname, gives the Greek spelling, names no other language and no given name, lists at least six people, and the Greek spelling romanizes to the article's title give or take one letter: 91 names. The Latin spelling is the article's title; where the ELOT 743 romanization of the Greek differs, the card gives it too (14 cards). The words in quotation marks after 'Family name' are the meaning the article's opening gives (24 cards). What an ending tells is from the list of common suffixes in the 'Greek name' article and is printed only for -opoulos, -akis, -akos, -eas, -oulis, -atos, -ellis, -ousis, -oudis, -idis, -ides, -iadis, -iades (for which the card keeps the article's 'son of' and drops its 'or descendant of'), -oglou and -ou (65 cards; the article's -itis, -iotis, -tzis, -lis and two-syllable -as are passed over because many names end that way by chance). An ending says where a kind of name arose, not where a family is from. The Latin spelling of every given name is the ELOT 743 romanization of the Greek, made by script, accents dropped. x.type is what the Name type row filters on (family, girl, boy); x.list is what the second row filters on (ancient, christian, everyday) and family cards carry none; x.ascii is the Latin spelling for sorting. Counted from this file: 263 cards, 91 family names, 75 women's names and 97 men's names; 48 cards on the ancient list, 79 on the Biblical and Christian list and 46 everyday forms. Every card that states a meaning, an origin or another form of the name carries the address of the page that statement was read on in x.src (and a second reference in x.src2 where one was used).
