What the full-moon names are
One American almanac prints a name for the full moon of each month: Wolf Moon in January, Snow Moon in February, through to the Cold Moon of December. The Harvest Moon is the full moon nearest the autumn equinox, and the Hunter's Moon follows it.
Tips
The pack names stay mild on purpose: a coat, a mark, a habit or a voice.
For a story set in one year, deal thirteen and give each full moon one new wolf.
Questions and answers
What is a good name for a werewolf?
Give it two. A plain human name hides the secret, and a pack name says what the other wolves notice: a coat, a habit or a howl. Tobias Marrow, called Stonehackle by the pack, is made that way.
What is the Wolf Moon?
It is a name for the full moon of January. One American almanac says wolves were often heard howling at that time of year, and that the name is thought to be English in origin, not Native American.
Where do the full moon names come from?
From several places. A 1937 almanac listed names it said came from early English ancestors. Others are said to be Native American or colonial American, and Wikipedia calls several of those attributions uncertain. Harvest Moon and Hunter's Moon are recorded from the early 1700s.
Are these werewolves from a book, a film or a game?
No. The names are made up, and each was searched as a page title on Wikipedia and on fan wikis of werewolf stories. A match was cut. Only the full-moon names are real.

One for each month 12
Beaver MoonNovember, when beavers finish getting ready for winter and go into their lodges, the almanac says. Wikipedia says only that the name is supposedly based in an Algonquian language.
Buck MoonJuly, when a buck's antlers are in full growth, the almanac says. Buck is also in a list of lunar months that Jonathan Carver printed in 1778.
Cold MoonDecember, when the winter cold takes hold and the nights grow long and dark, the almanac says.

Corn MoonSeptember. The almanac says corn was ready to harvest at this time, and gives Harvest Moon as the other name of the month's moon.
Flower MoonMay, when flowers spring up in abundance, the almanac says. The name is also in a 1937 almanac list of moons "named by our early English ancestors".
Hunter's MoonUsually October: the full moon that follows the Harvest Moon. The name is recorded from 1710, in a periodical that said "the country people" used it.
Pink MoonApril. The almanac ties it to the moss pink, or wild ground phlox, one of the first spring wildflowers. Wikipedia traces the name's spread to a 1995 book that named no source for most of its list.
Snow MoonFebruary, which the almanac calls typically a time of heavy snowfall.
Strawberry MoonJune: the time to gather ripening strawberries in what is now the northeastern United States, the almanac says.
Sturgeon MoonAugust. The almanac says the sturgeon of the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain were most easily caught at this full moon.
Wolf MoonJanuary. A long-running American almanac says wolves were often heard howling at this time of year, and that the name is not a traditional Native American one but is thought to be English in origin.
Worm MoonMarch. The almanac gives two stories: the earthworms of warming spring soil, or the larvae that come out of tree bark, as a traveler named Jonathan Carver wrote in the late 1700s.
Older English names 6
Egg MoonThe first of the three spring moons in a list printed by a Maine almanac in 1937, which said the moons "were named by our early English ancestors".

Hay MoonThe first of the three summer moons in the 1937 almanac list of moons "named by our early English ancestors".
Milk MoonThe second spring moon in the 1937 list. Wikipedia gives Milk Moon as a colonial American name for the May moon.
How this list was compiled: 18 traditional names for a full moon. Twelve are the month names printed by a long-running American almanac (https://www.almanac.com/full-moon-names, read 2026-10-02); the rest, and the cautions about where the names come from, are from the English Wikipedia article Full moon (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Full_moon, read 2026-10-02; CC BY-SA 4.0). The almanac says its names come from Native American, colonial American and other North American sources, and that such a name belonged to a whole lunar month; Wikipedia says the popular attribution of several names to Native Americans is uncertain. The wording of each line is ours. Licence: own work
