How this list was compiled
The 47 things to wear or to leave at home, and the line under each, were written for this page on 2026-10-13; no list was copied. Each row follows a page read on 2026-10-13 from a tourism office, a visitor bureau or a rodeo itself. Wyoming Office of Tourism, What to wear to a Wyoming rodeo, which most of the rows rest on (https://travelwyoming.com/blog/stories/post/what-to-wear-to-a-wyoming-rodeo-western-wear-from-head-to-toe/ ). Visit Cheyenne, the city’s visitor bureau, a first-timer’s guide to its rodeo (https://www.cheyenne.org/blog/post/your-first-cheyenne-frontier-days-a-locals-guide-to-the-daddy-of-em-all/ ) and Tips and tricks for Cheyenne rodeos (https://www.cheyenne.org/blog/post/tips-tricks-cheyenne-rodeos/ ). Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, 2027 rule book, rule R11.2.1 on the arena dress code for contestants (https://www.prorodeo.org/Documents/Portal/Home/PrcaBusiness/2027-PRCA-Rule-Book.pdf ). Cowgirl, a western magazine, Attending your first rodeo? Here’s what to bring (https://www.cowgirlmagazine.com/attending-your-first-rodeo-heres-what-to-bring/ ). Every rodeo sets its own rules on bags, umbrellas and seating, and mountain weather turns fast, so read the page of the rodeo you are going to. An indoor arena needs none of the weather rows. How it works
What should I wear to an outdoor rodeo? Jeans, closed-toed shoes and any western touches you like, plus a layer for the evening. These 47 things follow a state tourism office and rodeos’ own visitor pages.

The dress code is for the contestants
Most rodeos have no strict dress code for the crowd, a state tourism office says. The competitors do. The professional rodeo cowboys’ rule book requires a cowboy hat, a long-sleeved shirt and cowboy boots in the arena, and fines a member $25 for each article of clothing missing at each performance.
Rain or shine means dress for both
Three of the rodeos read for this list run rain or shine, one of them “rain, heat or shine”, and a fourth cancels only in extreme weather. Two of them have some covered seats, and one tells everyone sitting in the open to dress for the weather.
Read the rodeo’s own page before you leave: bag and umbrella rules differ from one arena to the next.
Questions and answers
Do I need cowboy boots to go to a rodeo?
No. A state tourism office says boots are not required but are a smart choice, since they cope with dust and rough ground. Without them, wear sturdy closed-toed shoes and leave the sandals at home.
Can you wear shorts to a rodeo?
Yes, though a state tourism office calls jeans the better choice against sun, dust, rough seating and the chill after sunset. One large Canadian rodeo’s premium seats have a rule of their own: shorts and skirts at mid-thigh or longer.
What do you wear to an outdoor rodeo at night?
The same outfit plus a layer. One Colorado rodeo says to bring a jacket or blanket because evenings cool down quickly, and another tells its crowd to dress for cool mountain evenings. A denim jacket or a flannel shirt does it.
Is western wear expected at a rodeo?
It is not required. A state tourism office calls western wear part of the experience and says being practical counts for more than a full western outfit. A Wyoming visitor bureau says to wear whatever makes you comfortable.
