What to eat chamoy with
Thin, bottled chamoy is sold like a hot sauce and goes on fresh fruit, juices, potato chips and nuts. The thick kind, a paste in small jars, is a dip for vegetables and firmer fruit. Chamoy is also poured into a street snack: a bag of tortilla chips loaded with cucumber, jicama, lime juice and peanuts, eaten from the bag with a fork.
Frozen and sweet
Chamoy flavors sorbet and raspados, which are shaved ice. A mangonada is mango sorbet or mango shaved ice with chamoy, chili powder and chunks of fruit, and its straw often has tamarind candy on the outside. Paletas, fruit ice pops, are commonly offered with chamoy too.
Chamoy is salty as well as sweet, so taste the fruit with it before adding salt or chili powder.
Questions and answers
What can you eat with chamoy besides fruit?
Candy and crunchy snacks. Toss gummy candies or sour belts in it, dip dried mango or sweet potato chips, and shake it over puffed wheat crisps or toasted corn kernels.
What does chamoy taste like?
Salty, sweet and sour at once, with the heat of chili: it is a Mexican sauce made from pickled fruit. If a bottle tastes too hot, put it on something cold and sweet, such as mango sorbet, shaved ice or watermelon.
What do you drink with chamoy?
Without alcohol: mango juice over ice in a glass with chamoy on the rim. Lime water with chia seeds takes a chamoy rim too.
