How it works

Same dress code, different ground

A farm wedding venue in coastal South Carolina puts it plainly: a farm wedding asks for the same level of dress as any other, and what changes is what you walk on. Semi-formal is the most common code at outdoor and farm venues, it says.

Country is not the same as western

A wedding planner quoted by a wedding planning company draws the line. Country dress is softer and takes its cue from the setting. Western dress borrows straight from cowboy style: boots, denim, fringe, suede, bolo ties and shirts with snap buttons.

  • If the invitation says only rustic or country, check the couple’s wedding website or ask them: the words cover a wide range.

Questions and answers

What should I wear to a country and western wedding?

Start from a wedding outfit and add one western piece: cowboy boots with a dress, or a bolo tie, a snap-button shirt or a hat with a suit or a sport coat. Dark jeans belong only where the couple asks for western dress.

Can you wear jeans to a barn wedding?

Usually not. A wedding planning company’s guide says a barn wedding is casual but not typically casual enough for jeans, and a farm venue calls them underdressed for a semi-formal one. A western dress code is the exception.

What do you wear to a barn wedding in the fall?

A stylist quoted in a bridal magazine suggests gold, orange, rust or sapphire, or dusty blue early in the season, and for men a suit in navy, brown or charcoal. Closed-toe shoes or ankle boots keep feet warm.
