A random unisex name generator, sorted by the split

Every name here went to at least 250 girls and 250 boys in ten years of US births, and to neither more than 80 times in 100. The menu under the button sorts them: Near even keeps the 114 names with 40 to 60 girls in 100, More girls 102 and More boys 114.

Find a name by its first letter

Open More filters in the same menu and choose a letter under Starts with. The split is a record of ten years of births, not a rule: Avery leans to girls at 80 in 100 and Rowan to boys at 74.

Questions and answers

What is a gender neutral name?

A name given to both girls and boys. On this page that is a measured fact: at least 250 girls and 250 boys got the name in the US from 2016 to 2025, and neither made up more than 80 in every 100.

What are the most common unisex names?

Avery, Riley, Parker, Rowan and Sawyer lead this list by births from 2016 to 2025. Avery and Riley lean to girls and the other three to boys; Charlie is the most given name with a near-even split.

Is this a nonbinary name generator?

It can be used as one: the same list answers a search for an androgynous name generator or a genderfluid name generator. The page records who was given each name at birth and says nothing about who a name is for.

Where do the numbers come from?

From the Social Security Administration's national file of first names on US birth records, which is in the public domain. We added up the ten newest years, 2016 to 2025, for each spelling and each sex.

How this list was compiled: A list by a written rule, computed on 2 October 2026 from the Social Security Administration's national file of first names on US birth records (names.zip, linked from https://www.ssa.gov/oact/babynames/limits.html; ssa.gov refuses scripted downloads, so the official zip was read from the Internet Archive's copy captured 2026-09-18, https://web.archive.org/web/20260918154125/https://www.ssa.gov/oact/babynames/names.zip, 7,860,026 bytes). For each spelling the births of the ten newest years in the file, 2016 to 2025, were added up for girls and for boys. A name is listed when at least 250 girls and at least 250 boys were given it in those ten years and neither sex makes up more than 80 in every 100 of the two together. Two entries that passed the rule are left out because they are placeholders on a record and not names (Baby, Unknown). That leaves 330 names. A card prints the split as girls and boys in every 100, rounded to a whole number, and the two ten-year counts. Near even means 40 to 60 girls in every 100 after rounding (114 names), More girls 61 to 80 (102) and More boys 20 to 39 (114). The file lists a name only in years with at least 5 births of that sex and counts every spelling as its own name, so Finley, Finnley and Finlee each have their own card. The split is a record of births and says nothing about any person. Licence: Public domain: the file is a work of the US federal government, which copyright does not cover (17 U.S.C. 105). The selection, the sums and the split are our own work.
