Words inside a name
Most names here join Hawaiian words: ka or ke is the, lani the sky, lei a garland or a child, kai the sea. A card prints the words with the glosses of the name's dictionary entry and adds no meaning of its own. Where an entry gives two readings, the card prints the first.
A list of words, not a naming
In Hawaiian tradition a name was made for a child with careful thought, and its meaning could be known only to the family. This page deals names that dictionaries record. It cannot say what a name means to a family.
Tips
83 names are listed for girls and boys; the menu under the button keeps those, the girls' names or the boys' names.
3 names begin with an ʻokina, such as ʻAukai; the Starts with menu files them under its last entry, 0 to 9.
37 cards add a plain spelling without the ʻokina and the kahakō.
Questions and answers
What is my Hawaiian name?
This page cannot tell you. It does not translate or respell your own name; it deals names the Hawaiian language already has. Press the button, and each card shows a name with the words it is made of.
What do Hawaiian names mean?
Most join everyday words. Kai is the sea, Leilani joins lei and lani, and Keanu joins ke, the, and anu, coolness. A card prints these glosses from the name's dictionary entry.
Are Hawaiian names for boys or girls?
Many are for both. Of the 129 names here, 83 are listed for girls and boys, 38 for girls and 8 for boys, by the mark in each name's dictionary entry. A use the entry calls rare or former is not counted.
Are these real Hawaiian names?
Yes. Each has a Hawaiian given-name entry in English Wiktionary, and every word on its card was looked up in the Pukui and Elbert Hawaiian Dictionary on 2 October 2026. No speaker of Hawaiian has read the list.

How this list was compiled: A list by a written rule, built on 2 October 2026. A name is listed when (1) it has a Hawaiian given-name entry in English Wiktionary (https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Category:Hawaiian_given_names, 350 single-word entries read that day); (2) the entry's etymology names the Hawaiian word or words the name is made of; and (3) every one of those words was found as a headword in the Hawaiian Dictionary of Mary Kawena Pukui and Samuel H. Elbert (1986), read on the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo's dictionary site (https://hilo.hawaii.edu/wehe/, the same day), with the entry's English gloss standing in that dictionary's definition. 136 names passed, and 7 of them were taken out at a second reading the same day, which leaves 129: 3 whose entry is marked as borrowed from an English name (Hale, Loke, Palapala), 3 whose gloss names magic, prayer or an angel, and 1 the entry marks as historical (Kamehameha). Left out before that: 113 entries that name no Hawaiian words (most are Hawaiian forms of English and Bible names), 53 with a word the dictionary search did not return, 16 whose gloss was not found in the dictionary's definition, 24 whose entry speaks of a god or of worship, and 5 whose gloss names a part of the body or a spirit. A card prints the words and the glosses as the name's Wiktionary entry gives them, and writes no meaning of its own; where an entry gives two readings the first is printed. A second pass looked each word up by its exact spelling and kept a name only when the dictionary has the word as a headword with the same ʻokina and kahakō; 1 name failed that and was left out. Whether a name is listed for girls, for boys or for both is the mark in the entry; a name whose entry calls the second use rare, uncommon or former is listed under the first only, and one the entry says is sometimes, occasionally or less commonly given to the other is listed for both. The Meaning groups are ours, set from the glosses: sea and water, sky, flowers and plants. The spelling with the ʻokina and the kahakō is the entry's; the plain spelling drops both. No speaker of Hawaiian has read the list. Family names are not listed. Licence: Names, words and glosses: English Wiktionary, CC BY-SA 4.0 (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/). The Pukui and Elbert dictionary was used as a check only; nothing is copied from it. The rule and the groups are our own work.
