Name Generator for Book Characters: Real US First and Last Names: how it works
This name generator for book characters pairs a first name with a surname, both from public records. The 711 first names are every name in a Social Security top 100 for any decade from the 1880s to the 2010s. The 1,993 surnames are from the 2020 Census. It is US data only, and no pairing is checked against real people or published books.
Match the name to the birth year
Most name generator characters sound as if they were born in the same year. In the full list, each first name sits under the decade where it ranked highest: Mildred and Walter in the 1910s, Kayla and Tyler in the 1990s. Its line gives its run in the top 100: Mary stayed from the 1880s through the 2000s.
Lock one half, reroll the other
Press New name and both rows change. The lock on a row keeps that half and the button beside it changes only that row, so you can hold Kowalski while you name a family. Three surnames in four come from census ranks 2,001 to 3,500, which keeps a cast from filling up with Smiths. There are 1,417,023 pairings.
Tips
- Hazel is in the girls' top 100 through the 1930s, gone for seven decades and back in the 2010s, so it suits a great-grandmother or a child. 35 names came back after four decades or more away.
- The top 100 boy names cover 75 of every 100 boys in the 1950s table and 41 in the 2010s table, so a modern classroom should not hold three Liams.
- Keep your main cast's first letters apart: if Marie, Martin and Marcus come up, reroll two.
Questions and answers
Does this random book character name generator use real names?
Yes, each half. First names come from Social Security card applications and surnames from the 2020 Census, where even the last, Crist at rank 3,500, was reported by 9,933 people. Any result can match a real person, so search the full name before you give it to a villain. The page adds no birthday, address or other detail.
Can I set the birth decade or ask for a boy's name?
Not with a switch. The full list shelves first names by decade, and each line names the girls' table, the boys' table or both. Eight were on both, Leslie and Jordan among them. Reroll First name until one from your shelf comes up, then lock it.
Why is a surname I expected missing?
Surnames are census ranks 1 to 500 and 2,001 to 3,500: Gallagher (488) can come up, Russo (740) cannot. Ranks 501 to 2,000 are on the surname generator. No meanings are given. For a Japanese character, try the Japanese name generator.
