Questions and answers

What Japanese last names mean fire?

Names written with 火, the kanji for fire, include Hino 火野, fire plus field, Himura 火村, fire plus village, Hikawa 火川, fire plus river, and Hiuchiishi 火打石, fire plus strike plus stone. These are the meanings of the kanji.

Are there Japanese last names meaning flame?

One on this list. Nukutani 炎谷 pairs 炎, flame or blaze, with valley; the dictionary also records the reading Nukudani. The 20 names with 焼 hold a kanji for burning, such as Yakiyama 焼山, burning plus mountain.

What does hi mean in Japanese last names?

In these names hi is a reading of 火, fire, as in Hino 火野 and Hiyama 火山. The same sound is written with other kanji in other names, such as 日 for sun, so the kanji decide the meaning.

Are these Japanese fire last names real?

They are names on record. Each is tagged as a surname in JMnedict, an open dictionary of Japanese names, with the reading shown. It is a dictionary and not a count, and many are very rare.

Does a fire kanji say something about the family?

No. The meanings are what a dictionary gives for each character, not a record of how a family came by its name, and they say nothing about anyone who carries it.

How this list was compiled: A list by a written rule, built on 3 October 2026. Names: every written form of two or three kanji that JMnedict, the name dictionary of the Electronic Dictionary Research and Development Group (file dated 2026-10-03, https://www.edrdg.org/enamdict/enamdict_doc.html), tags as a surname and that holds one of ten fire kanji: 火, 炎, 焔, 焼, 燃, 灯, 燈, 煙, 灰, 炭. That is 232 written forms. A name is kept only when one of its surname readings in JMnedict splits kanji by kanji into readings KANJIDIC lists for those characters (23 forms do not). Left out as our own call: 4 names that also hold a kanji of this site's dark-kanji or sweet-kanji lists, so that no name stands on two kanji lists; 5 names whose other kanji has a meaning this site does not print (weapons among them); 9 written forms that are also a pen name, a company name or an everyday word (coal, lime, a paper lantern, a lighthouse, a way of cooking, a matchlock fuse and an old word for a fireman); and names of one kanji or with kana in them. No name with 焔 or 燃 passed these tests, so eight of the ten kanji stand on the list. That leaves 180 names. Each card gives one reading on record, always one that splits kanji by kanji: where the dictionary lists one surname reading, that one (148 names); where it lists several (32 names), the first in kana order among those built only from the kanji's native Japanese (kun and name) readings in KANJIDIC, else the first in kana order. Up to four other readings on record follow, and the card does not say which is heard most. The romaji is Hepburn, made from the kana one kanji at a time. What the kanji mean: for the fire kanji the first English meaning in KANJIDIC (for 焼 its two meanings there, bake and burning) (file dated 2026-10-03, https://www.edrdg.org/wiki/index.php/KANJIDIC_Project), but for 炎, where KANJIDIC lists inflammation first and then flame and blaze, the card gives flame, blaze; for the other kanji one or two of its meanings there, for common characters the ones this site's Japanese last names page already uses. 燈 is the older written form of 灯. These are dictionary meanings of the characters, not a record of how any family came by its name. JMnedict is a dictionary of names on record, not a count: most of these names are very rare, and no figure for how many people carry one stands behind this list. Shared with other lists of this site, matched on the kanji: 0 of 180 names (0.0 in 100); cap 40.
