    School Name of the day

    How it works

This Japanese school name generator builds a school name in three parts for a story, a comic or a game: a made-up town such as Aohama, a marker such as Kita, north, and a kind of school.

    Town, marker, kind

Press New school name. Tap a part to lock it, then press again. Lock the town and press for its other schools: Aohama Kita High School, Aohama Daiichi Junior High School, Aohama Minami Elementary School.

    What each part means

Every town is two Japanese words joined and shown with its kanji. 青浜: ao (青), blue, and hama (浜), beach. The markers are plain words: Kita is north, Minami is south, Chuo is central, Daiichi is first and Joshi is girls'. The lists under the tool give the kanji and meaning of every part.

    Questions and answers

What are the kinds of school in Japan?

Elementary school is shōgakkō. Secondary education is split into junior high schools, chūgakkō, which cover the seventh through ninth grade, and senior high schools, kōtōgakkō, shortened to kōkō, which mostly cover grades ten through twelve.

Can I use it as a Japanese high school names generator?

Yes. Tap the kind row and press its arrows until it reads High School, then lock it: every press now names another high school. Technical, agricultural and commercial high schools are in the list as well.

What does Daiichi mean in a school name?

Daiichi, written 第一, means first or number one. Daini, 第二, is second and Daisan, 第三, is third.

    Are these real Japanese schools?

No. Each town is two real Japanese words joined for this page; joins found in a dictionary of Japanese names or as a Wikipedia page title were left out. Nobody fluent has read the joins, so treat names such as Kitsuneura as story names.

How this list was compiled: 63 town names, each made on 2026-10-03 by joining two real Japanese words; the line gives the kanji and the meaning of both. The kanji, reading and meaning of every word were checked by script that day against JMdict, the Japanese-English dictionary file of the Electronic Dictionary Research and Development Group (https://www.edrdg.org/jmdict/j_jmdict.html, CC BY-SA 4.0). A join was left out when its kanji stand in JMdict as a word or in JMnedict, the same group's dictionary of Japanese names (https://www.edrdg.org/enamdict/enamdict_doc.html, CC BY-SA 4.0), when it is a place of 500 people or more in GeoNames (https://download.geonames.org/export/dump/, CC BY 4.0), when it is on another list of this site, or when it, or the name with High School after it, is an English Wikipedia page title. The readings are joined as they stand and the second part is not voiced. Nobody who reads Japanese as a first language has read the joins. 27 candidates were cut (26 found in the text of English Wikipedia; 1 a Wikipedia page title), among them Shioura, Asahama, Fueoka, Fuese, Fuyumori, Fuyuse.
