    Questions and answers

    What is an oni?

A kind of yōkai, demon, ogre or troll in Japanese folklore. Oni are believed to live in caves or deep within mountains and are typically portrayed as hulking figures with one or more horns growing out of their heads.

Is this a Japanese demon name generator?

Yes. Oni is the Japanese word this page is built on, often translated demon or ogre. Every first half is a real Japanese word, and every ending is carried by a figure of Japanese folklore.

Are the joined names real Japanese?

Each half is real and was checked in two dictionaries. The joined name is made up: a script joined the halves, and no Japanese speaker has read them, so treat a result as a name for a story.

How this list was compiled: 33 real Japanese words, chosen on 2026-10-02 for an oni: colors, metals, storm and fire, beasts and rock. Every word, its kanji, its reading and its meaning were checked by script on 2026-10-02 in two dictionaries: the Japanese section of the English Wiktionary entry for the kanji (https://en.wiktionary.org/, CC BY-SA 4.0) and JMdict, the Japanese-English dictionary file of the Electronic Dictionary Research and Development Group (https://www.edrdg.org/jmdict/j_jmdict.html, CC BY-SA 4.0). A word was kept only if both hold the same kanji, reading and meaning. Long vowels are written short in the name (Okami for ōkami); the kana on each line gives the full reading. The words for red, blue and ox are left out, because with the ending -oni they are the red oni and blue oni of a well-known story and the ushi-oni of folklore. 11 candidates were cut (9 a fan wiki page title; 1 other reasons; 1 a rude word inside or across the join), among them Honoo, Tani, Kuro, Kuma, Saru, Taka. Checked again on 2026-10-03: every word against both dictionaries, and every joined name as an English Wikipedia page title. The word for tiger was cut, because with -gozen it is Tora Gozen, a woman of an old war tale. Licence: own selection and wording; meanings from English Wiktionary and JMdict (CC BY-SA 4.0)

    M 1

    • -maru 丸 (まる, maru): a suffix for the names of people, ships and swords. Kidōmaru, an oni of a Kamakura-period story collection, carries it.

    O 1

    • -oni 鬼 (おに, oni): the word oni itself. The ushi-oni, the ox oni of western Japan, carries it.
    How this list was compiled

4 endings found in the names of oni and oni-like figures of Japanese folklore, each with one figure that carries it. The figures were checked on 2026-10-02 and again on 2026-10-03 in the openings of the English Wikipedia articles Shuten-dōji, Ibaraki-dōji, Kidōmaru, Ushi-oni and Suzuka Gozen (https://en.wikipedia.org/, CC BY-SA 4.0), and the kanji and readings in the two dictionaries named in the first list. What the page says an oni is follows the opening of the article Oni, read on 2026-10-05. The named figures are facts on this page and are never dealt as results. The joined names are ours: a script made them, and no Japanese speaker has read them. Licence: own selection and wording; facts from English Wikipedia, English Wiktionary and JMdict (CC BY-SA 4.0)
