    How it works

This library name generator builds a library for a story or a game world: an invented name, a real kind of library, explained in the list below, and one odd collection it keeps. It also gives fantasy library names.

    Read the full guide

    Name a library

Press New library name. Tap the name, the kind or the collection, press its padlock, then press again to change the rest. Lock Chained Library and press for the old reading rooms of a whole city.

    What the kinds mean

An athenaeum is an institution for the advancement of learning, or its reading room. A scriptorium was a writing room in a medieval monastery. In a chained library the books are chained to the bookcase. A circulating library lent books to subscribers for a fee. Bibliotheca is an obsolete word for a library.

    Tips
    • Lock the collection and change the name until the two sound like one place.

    Questions and answers

What is a good name for a fictional library?

A founder, a place or a plain word, then an old word for a library: the Inkwell Athenaeum, the Three Owls Archive. One strange collection, such as maps of roads that have moved, gives a story something to find there.

What are other words for a library?

Athenaeum, archive, reading room, repository and the obsolete bibliotheca all name a place that keeps books or records. A scriptorium is close, but it was a room where manuscripts were copied.

    What is a chained library?

A chained library is one where each book is attached to its bookcase by a chain, long enough to take the book from the shelf and read it, but not to remove it from the library.

    Are these real libraries?

No. They are for stories and games. Each invented name was searched in name lists, place lists and across Wikipedia, and each plain name was searched with every kind as a Wikipedia title. A small real library may still share a name.

How this list was compiled: 93 names for a made-up library in a story or a game, written for this page: invented names of founders and places, and plain names taken from the parts of a book and the corners of an old town. Each made-up name was checked by script on 2026-10-03 against a dictionary, lists of first names and surnames, GeoNames places (towns of the world, and every name in the tables for the United Kingdom and the United States, also with the spaces taken out; https://download.geonames.org/export/dump/, CC BY 4.0), names from published fiction, every list on this site, the page titles of English Wikipedia and a full-text search of English Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/, CC BY-SA 4.0). 62 of 121 candidates were cut (48 set aside on a second reading; 7 found on English Wikipedia; 3 already on another list of this site; 1 a real first name or surname; 1 a real place; 1 a rude word inside the letters; 1 one letter from the name of a real library). The names come from one list kept for all the made-up place pages of this site, so none is on two pages. No list of names is complete, so search a name before you publish it. Each plain name was also searched with every kind on this page as a page title of English Wikipedia. Two plain names were cut after that search because a library with its own English Wikipedia article carries the name. Licence: own work
