Name a college
Press New college name. Tap the name, the kind or the last part to lock it, then press again to change the rest. Lock State University and press for the names of a whole state system.
College or university
A university awards degrees in several disciplines and does research. A college can stand alone or be one part of a university. A community college generally leads to an associate degree; a conservatory teaches music; an institute of technology keeps to engineering and science. Used as a university name generator, lock University.
Tips
For two rival schools, take one founder's name and one landscape name.
Lock what the college is known for and change the name until the two fit.
Questions and answers
What is a good name for a fictional college?
A surname or a piece of landscape, then the kind of school. Many real colleges carry a founder's name or a place name, so a made-up one fits in the same shape.
What is the difference between a college and a university?
A university is an institution of education and research that awards degrees in several disciplines. A college may be a stand-alone school or one part of a larger university.
What is a community college?
A community college is an undergraduate school that generally leads to an associate degree, a certificate or a diploma.
Are these real colleges?
No. The founders' names are invented and were searched in name lists, place lists and across Wikipedia. A landscape name can still match a small real school, so search a name before you publish it. For real ones, use the random college generator.
How this list was compiled: 97 names for a made-up college, written for this page: invented surnames and estates of the kind a founder leaves behind, and plain compass and landscape names. Each made-up name was checked by script on 2026-10-02 against a dictionary, lists of first names and surnames, GeoNames places (towns of the world, and every name in the tables for the United Kingdom and the United States; https://download.geonames.org/export/dump/, CC BY 4.0), names from published fiction, every list on this site, the page titles of English Wikipedia and a full-text search of English Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/, CC BY-SA 4.0). 74 of 143 candidates were cut (33 found on English Wikipedia; 12 a real place; 11 a real first name or surname; 9 a name from published fiction, or one letter from one; 6 already on another list of this site; 2 a rude word inside the letters; 1 a dictionary word). The names come from one list kept for all the made-up place pages of this site, so none is on two pages. No list of names is complete, so search a name before you publish it. Each plain name was also searched with every kind on this page as a page title of English Wikipedia and as a name in the GeoNames tables, which hold many schools. Two plain names were taken out after a second check: one is a place in a film, and one is a word away from a real college. Every name was also checked against the 6,163 institutions, with their other names, in the 2023 directory file of the US Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (https://nces.ed.gov/ipeds/, a federal file in the public domain): none is part of an institution's name.
