    How it works

This mountain name generator deals a peak name, a word for a peak such as Pike, Tor or Fell, and the range it stands in. It doubles as a mountain range name generator: the third row lists ranges.

    Read the full guide

Name a peak, then a whole range

Press New mountain name. Tap a part to lock it, then press again for the rest. Lock the range and press to name every summit in it. Lock the peak word on Tor and a whole moor fills with tors.

    What the peak words mean

A tor is a craggy outcrop of rock on the summit of a hill. A pike is a northern English word for a hill or mountain with a sharp summit, and a butte is an isolated hill with steep sides and a flat top. Every word has its meaning in the list under the tool.

    Tips
    • For fantasy mountain names with a northern sound, lock the peak word on Fell, Pike or Crag.
    • Sierra comes from the Latin for saw, so it suits a range with a jagged skyline.
    • A cordillera is an extensive chain of mountains, and a massif is a principal mountain mass.

    Questions and answers

How do you come up with a mountain name?

Join two plain words for what the summit looks like or what lives on it, then add a word for a peak. Frostcrown Pike and Ravenhelm Tor are made that way.

What are some fantasy mountain range names?

The third row is a list of them: the Lantern Mountains, the Hollow Alps, the Sierra Lunera and more. Lock the first two rows and press to read through them, or see the full list under the tool.

What is the difference between a mountain and a hill?

A dictionary calls a hill an elevated landmass smaller than a mountain. This page has both: a knoll is a small mound or rounded hill, and a pinnacle is a tall, sharp and craggy rock or mountain.

    Are these real mountains?

No. Each name was checked against GeoNames records of mountains, hills and ranges in six English-speaking countries, Wikipedia page titles and fantasy fan wikis, and matches were cut. Search a name before you publish it.
