An eyelash, the spleen, the funny bone: five parts of the body come up at a press. The list holds 125 parts, 58 you can see and 67 under the skin. Each card names the body system and the job the part does, and three rows of filters keep the draw to a region, a system or the parts on show.

Charades, drawing practice and anatomy revision

For charades, tap Parts you can see, set the count to 1 and ban pointing. The actor has to show the job, so an eyelid blinks and a calf stands on tiptoe. For drawing practice, keep that chip and start a two minute timer. For revision, switch to Under the skin, press Hide all jobs and say the system and the job before you tap Show job.

How the body systems are labeled

Each card sits under one of ten systems. Nine follow the SEER anatomy course from the US National Cancer Institute. The tenth is integumentary, the textbook word for skin, hair and nails. Eyes, ears and taste buds count as nervous system, because the senses report to the brain. The throat and the pancreas each work for two systems and come up under both.

Tips

  • The funny bone is the trick card: it is the ulnar nerve, and the name is probably a pun on humerus, the upper arm bone.
  • Muscle names are descriptions. Biceps means two heads, triceps means three, and the deltoid and trapezius are named for their shapes.
  • Creature design: draw 3 parts and give them all to one invented animal, such as a fish with kneecaps and eyelashes.

Questions and answers

Which parts of the body are covered?

125 parts: 43 from the head and neck, 35 from the chest, belly and back, 15 from the arms and hands, 17 from the legs and feet, and 15 that run all over the body. The rows combine, so Head and neck with Under the skin leaves 17. The list keeps five single bones and leaves the rest to the random bone generator.

Are private parts in the list?

No. The genitals and the reproductive system are left out, so the page can go on a classroom board or into a family game without a surprise. Every other body system is covered, from the pituitary gland to the big toe.

Can I use the random body part generator with young children or language learners?

Yes. A parent or teacher taps Parts you can see and draws one card at a time, and the children point to the part on their own body. In a language class the teacher shows the English word and the class answers in the language they are learning.

  • Eyelash Integumentary system. Sets off a blink when something brushes it, before it reaches the eye.

  • Face Muscular system. Small muscles fixed to the skin, not just to bone, pull it into smiles and frowns.

  • Pupil Nervous system. The dark opening in the iris that lets light in. It shrinks in bright light.
  • Retina Nervous system. Light-sensing layer at the back of the eye, made of cells called rods and cones.
  • Salivary glands Digestive system. Make saliva, which wets food, lets you taste it and starts breaking down starch.
  • Scalp Integumentary system. Skin over the top of the skull, where head hair grows.
  • Sinuses Respiratory system. Air-filled spaces in the bones around the nose, lined with tissue that makes mucus.
  • Skull Skeletal system. 22 bones: 8 form a case around the brain and 14 shape the face.
  • Taste buds Nervous system. Sensor cells, mostly on the tongue, that pick up sweet, sour, salty, bitter and savory.
  • Temple Skeletal system. The flat side of the head behind the eye, close to where four skull bones join.
  • Throat Respiratory and digestive systems. A shared passage: air goes on to the windpipe, food to the food pipe.
  • Thyroid Endocrine system. Butterfly-shaped gland in the neck. Its hormones set how fast the body uses energy.
  • Tongue Digestive system. Moves food around the mouth, carries the taste buds and shapes speech.
  • Tonsils Lymphatic system. Pads of tissue at the back of the throat that meet germs coming in through the mouth.
  • Tooth Digestive system. Cuts and grinds food. A full adult set has 32 and a child's first set has 20.

  • Adrenal glands Endocrine system. One sits on top of each kidney. They release adrenaline and cortisol.
  • Alveoli (air sacs) Respiratory system. Tiny sacs at the ends of the airways where oxygen and carbon dioxide swap with the blood.
  • Aorta Cardiovascular system. The body's largest artery. It carries oxygen-rich blood out of the heart.
  • Appendix Digestive system. Small pouch off the start of the large intestine that contains lymph tissue.
  • Armpit Lymphatic system. A hollow under the shoulder joint that holds a cluster of lymph nodes.
  • Back Muscular system. Broad muscles here hold you upright and power pulling and lifting.
  • Belly (abdomen) Digestive system. The space below the ribs that holds the stomach, liver and intestines.
  • Belly button (navel) Integumentary system. The scar left where the umbilical cord joined you to your mother before birth.
  • Bladder Urinary system. Stretchy muscular bag that stores urine until you go to the toilet.
  • Bronchi Respiratory system. The two branches of the windpipe, one into each lung.
  • Chest Respiratory system. Rises and falls as the ribs and diaphragm draw air into the lungs.
  • Collarbone Skeletal system. The only long bone that lies flat across the body, and the bone people break most often.
  • Diaphragm Muscular system. Dome of muscle under the lungs. It flattens to pull air in and relaxes to push it out.
  • Food pipe (esophagus) Digestive system. Muscular tube that squeezes each swallow from the throat down to the stomach.
  • Gallbladder Digestive system. Stores bile from the liver and releases it to help digest fat.

  • Large intestine Digestive system. Takes water and salts back from what is left and forms solid waste.
  • Liver Digestive system. The largest gland in the body. Makes bile, stores sugar and clears toxins from blood.
  • Lungs Respiratory system. Pass oxygen into the blood and take carbon dioxide out.
  • Pancreas Digestive and endocrine systems. Makes digestive enzymes and the hormones insulin and glucagon.
  • Pectorals (chest muscles) Muscular system. Fan-shaped muscles that pull the arms forward and across the chest.
  • Rib cage Skeletal system. 24 ribs, 12 on each side, curve round from the spine to guard the heart and lungs.
  • Shoulder Skeletal system. A ball-and-socket joint, and the most mobile joint in the body.
  • Small intestine Digestive system. Finishes digestion and absorbs most nutrients. About 3 to 5 meters long in an adult.
  • Spinal cord Nervous system. Cable of nerve tissue inside the spine that carries messages between brain and body.
  • Spine Skeletal system. 24 separate vertebrae plus the sacrum and tailbone. It shields the spinal cord.
  • Spleen Lymphatic system. Filters the blood, removes worn-out red cells and stores white cells.
  • Stomach Digestive system. Churns food with acid and enzymes until it is a thick liquid.
  • Thymus Lymphatic system. Sits behind the breastbone and trains T cells. It is most active in childhood.
  • Trapezius Muscular system. Kite-shaped muscle across the upper back that shrugs and steadies the shoulders.
  • Ureters Urinary system. Two thin tubes that carry urine from the kidneys down to the bladder.
  • Windpipe (trachea) Respiratory system. Tube held open by C-shaped rings of cartilage that carries air toward the lungs.

  • Arm Skeletal system. Three long bones, the humerus, radius and ulna, run from shoulder to wrist.
  • Biceps Muscular system. On the front of the upper arm. Bends the elbow and turns the palm up.
  • Deltoid Muscular system. The rounded cap of the shoulder. Lifts the arm out to the side.
  • Elbow Skeletal system. Hinge joint where the upper arm bone meets the two bones of the forearm.
  • Finger Skeletal system. Three bones each. Tendons from muscles in the forearm and palm do the moving.
  • Fingernail Integumentary system. Plate of keratin that guards the fingertip. It grows about 3.5 mm a month.
  • Fingertip Integumentary system. Ridged skin packed with touch sensors. The ridge pattern is your fingerprint.
  • Forearm Skeletal system. The radius rolls over the ulna here, which is how you turn your palm up or down.
  • Funny bone Nervous system. Not a bone. It is the ulnar nerve crossing the elbow, which tingles when bumped.
  • Hand Skeletal system. 27 bones counting the wrist, so it can grip a hammer or thread a needle.
  • Knuckle Skeletal system. A finger joint. The big row is where the fingers meet the hand.
  • Palm Integumentary system. Thick, bare skin with ridges and many sweat glands, built for grip.
  • Thumb Skeletal system. Two bones and a saddle-shaped joint let it swing across to meet each fingertip.
  • Triceps Muscular system. On the back of the upper arm. Straightens the elbow.
  • Wrist Skeletal system. Eight small bones in two rows let the hand tilt and circle.

  • Achilles tendon Muscular system. The thickest tendon in the body. It ties the calf muscles to the heel bone.
  • Ankle Skeletal system. Hinge joint where the two lower leg bones grip the top of the foot.
  • Arch of the foot Skeletal system. A curve of bones, ligaments and tendons that flattens and springs back each step.
  • Big toe Skeletal system. Has two bones where the other toes have three.
  • Calf Muscular system. Muscles that lift the heel each time you step, jump or stand on tiptoe.
  • Foot Skeletal system. 26 bones. Both feet together hold about a quarter of all the bones in the body.
  • Hamstrings Muscular system. Three muscles at the back of the thigh that bend the knee.
  • Heel Skeletal system. Built on the largest bone of the foot, the first part to land in a walking step.
  • Knee Skeletal system. The largest joint in the body. Two pads of cartilage inside it absorb shock.
  • Kneecap Skeletal system. A small shield-shaped bone that sits inside the tendon of the thigh muscles.
  • Leg Skeletal system. Four bones from hip to ankle: the femur, the kneecap, the tibia and the fibula.
  • Quadriceps Muscular system. Four muscles on the front of the thigh that straighten the knee.
  • Shin Skeletal system. The front edge of the shinbone lies just under the skin, which is why knocks hurt.
  • Sole Integumentary system. Thick, bare skin on the bottom of the foot that takes your full weight.
  • Thigh Skeletal system. Holds the femur, the longest bone in the body.
  • Toe Skeletal system. Helps you balance and gives the last push at the end of each step.
  • Toenail Integumentary system. Made of keratin like a fingernail, but grows about half as fast.

  • Arteries Cardiovascular system. Thick-walled vessels that carry blood away from the heart.
  • Blood Cardiovascular system. Carries oxygen, food, hormones and heat. An average adult has roughly 5 liters.
  • Bone marrow Skeletal system. Soft tissue inside bones that makes red cells, white cells and platelets.
  • Capillaries Cardiovascular system. The thinnest vessels, where oxygen and food pass from the blood into tissue.
