Random places in California, one county at a time
Choose a county to stay near home: Los Angeles County has 88 cities on the list, Orange County 34 and Riverside County 28. Ten counties have a single city, San Francisco among them, where the city and the county are one. Alpine, Mariposa and Trinity Counties never come up, because they have no incorporated city at all.
As a random California city generator for a story
A setting your readers do not already picture is easy to get: 207 of the 483 places have under 25,000 people, and choosing Under 25,000 draws only those. For a county quiz, mind the names: the city of San Joaquin is in Fresno County, Yuba City is in Sutter County and Sutter Creek is in Amador County.
- Ventura and Paso Robles go by their everyday names. Their legal names are San Buenaventura and El Paso de Robles.
Questions and answers
How many cities are in California?
The Census Bureau's 2025 estimates list 483 incorporated cities and towns. The newest is Mountain House in San Joaquin County, which became a city on 1 July 2024. All 483 have a card.
What is the smallest city in California?
By the 2025 estimates it is Industry, in Los Angeles County, with 199 people. Amador City has 204 and Vernon 207. Seven California cities have under 500 people.
Is a town different from a city in California?
Not in law. California makes no distinction between the two, and a place may use either word in its name. On this list 21 places call themselves towns, from Apple Valley with 75,247 people down to Colma with 1,385.
Is East Los Angeles a city?
No. East Los Angeles has no city government of its own, so the Census Bureau counts it as a census designated place and gives it no city estimate. A random city in California is always an incorporated city or town.
