Random Alabama cities, big and small
Four cities stand apart at the top: Huntsville, Mobile, Birmingham and Montgomery, the capital, each with more than 195,000 people. Tuscaloosa, fifth, has 114,316, and after it the list thins fast: only 66 places have 10,000 people or more. Under 1,000 people draws from the small towns alone.
A random place in Alabama, county by county
All 67 counties are in the dropdown, and each has at least one place of 1,000 people. Jefferson County has 34 places of every size, more than twice as many as any other, and Montgomery County has only two, Montgomery and Pike Road. Hoover's card says mostly in Jefferson County, because three in ten of its people live in Shelby County.
- A county quiz has six traps here, among them Jackson, which is in Clarke County, and Marion, which is in Perry County.
Questions and answers
How many incorporated cities are in Alabama?
The Census Bureau's 2025 estimates list 463 incorporated places, 187 called cities and 276 called towns, spread over all 67 counties. Pine Level in Autauga County, incorporated in 2023, has no estimate in the file yet and so no card.
What makes a place a city and not a town in Alabama?
Population. The Code of Alabama calls a municipality of 2,000 people or more a city and a smaller one a town. A card uses the word the Census Bureau has on file, so Clio is a city with 1,202 people.
