A random Colorado city from any of 64 counties
Weld County has 26 places, more than twice as many as Arapahoe County, next with 12. Nine counties have a single one. Aurora spreads over three counties, so its card says mostly in Arapahoe County.
City or town says little about size
Castle Rock, a town, has 83,815 people, and Black Hawk, a city, has 120. Five names end in Village, Greenwood Village and Snowmass Village among them, yet Colorado has no villages: each of the five is a city or a town.
- Las Animas, a city, is in Bent County, not Las Animas County, and the town of Kit Carson is in Cheyenne County.
Questions and answers
How many cities are in Colorado?
Colorado has 272 active municipalities: 73 cities, 197 towns, and Denver and Broomfield, each a city and a county in one. The 272 cards differ by one: Bonanza is missing from the Census estimates, and Hartman, declared abandoned in July 2026, still has a card.
What is the smallest town in Colorado?
Carbonate, in Garfield County, has had no year-round residents since the 1890 census, and the 2025 estimate gives it none. The smallest with people in the estimates is Lakeside in Jefferson County, with 16.
What is the difference between a city and a town in Colorado?
State law makes few distinctions. A statutory city must have 2,000 people when it incorporates, and a home rule municipality may take either title in its charter. Cities are usually the larger, but not always.
What are the largest cities in Colorado?
Denver, the capital, with 740,613 people, then Colorado Springs with 494,743, Aurora with 410,053, Fort Collins with 171,500 and Lakewood with 156,927. Thirteen places have 100,000 people or more.
