Why the cards stop at 500 people

Ohio has 255 villages smaller than that, 24 of them with under 100 people. The cards run from Columbus down to Alexandria, in Licking County, with 501. A card's rank counts all 923.

Eighty-eight counties and 23 names that mislead

Every county has a place on the cards; the County list has room for 80, the ones with the largest places. Twenty-three cards carry the name of a county they are not in: Hamilton is in Butler County, Warren in Trumbull County and Sandusky in Erie County. Three places are called Oakwood, so each names its county.

  • Bay Village and The Village of Indian Hill are cities, while 16 villages have City in their name, Plain City and Ohio City among them.
  • South Bloomfield, in Pickaway County, gained about 2,000 people between 2020 and 2025 and now has 4,164.

Questions and answers

How many cities are in Ohio?

The 2025 estimates have 253 cities and 670 villages in Ohio once Aquilla, which voted to dissolve in 2024, is left out: 923 municipalities. Six cities have 100,000 people or more.

What is the difference between a city and a village in Ohio?

Size. The Ohio Constitution makes a municipality of 5,000 people or more a city and a smaller one a village. The class follows the federal census, so estimates can cross the line: West Jefferson, a village, has 5,827 people and Munroe Falls, a city, 4,973.

What is the smallest village in Ohio?

Rendville, in Perry County, had 28 people at the 2020 census, the fewest in Ohio, but it has no 2025 estimate. Among places that do, Miltonsburg in Monroe County is smallest, with 31. Neither has a card.

What are the largest cities in Ohio?

Columbus, the capital, with 938,396 people, then Cleveland with 363,608, Cincinnati with 314,367, Toledo with 263,423 and Akron with 189,691. Dayton is sixth with 136,688.

How this list was compiled: Every city and village of Ohio with 500 people or more on 1 July 2025: 668 of the 923 counted here, picked by that rule and not by hand. Each has the county that holds most of its people, its population and its place among all 923. Figures are the US Census Bureau's Vintage 2025 City and Town Population Totals, the estimates for 1 July 2025 (https://www2.census.gov/programs-surveys/popest/datasets/2020-2025/cities/totals/sub-est2025.csv, read 2026-10-09). These are the file's incorporated places; the state's townships, 1,308 in the file, are not on the list. A place is called a city or a village as that file names it. A place that crosses a county line is filed under the county where most of its people live and says "mostly in" where under 95 in 100 live there. Three places are named Oakwood and each card carries its county. Places with the same estimate share the higher rank. The file has 924 active places; Aquilla, in Geauga County, voted in 2024 to dissolve its village (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aquilla,_Ohio) and is left out of the 923. The names were compared with https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_municipalities_in_Ohio, whose table has the other 923 (it calls Brinkhaven Gann and gives Croton, New Matamoras and Thurman, the names the file puts in brackets, as Hartford, Matamoras and Centerville) and two villages with no row in the file, Rendville (28 people at the 2020 census, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rendville,_Ohio) and Rome in Adams County; its text counts 926 municipalities. That page was also read for the 16 villages with City in their name. The rule that tells a city from a village is Article XVIII, Section 1 of the Ohio Constitution (https://codes.ohio.gov/ohio-constitution/section-18.1) and section 703.01 of the Revised Code (https://codes.ohio.gov/ohio-revised-code/section-703.01). The Village of Indian Hill's name was read at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_Hill,_Ohio, and the state capital checked against https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_capitals_in_the_United_States the same day.
