Fifty-five counties, seven with a single place

Every county has a municipality on the cards, and seven have exactly one, such as Buckhannon in Upshur County and Hinton in Summers County. Fourteen cards go under Kanawha County, the most. Wheeling is in Ohio County, and Charles Town, in Jefferson County, is a different place from Charleston, the capital.

Three towns with two names

Berkeley Springs is formally the town of Bath, and Webster Springs was incorporated as Addison; each goes by the name of its post office, and so does its card. The Census file lists Coalton, in Randolph County, as Womelsdorf (Coalton).

  • Charles Town gained about 2,800 people between 2020 and 2025, the most in the state, while Charleston lost more than 2,500.

How this list was compiled: All 230 municipalities of West Virginia, each with its county, its population and its place among the 230. Figures are the US Census Bureau's Vintage 2025 City and Town Population Totals, the estimates for 1 July 2025 (https://www2.census.gov/programs-surveys/popest/datasets/2020-2025/cities/totals/sub-est2025.csv, read 2026-10-09). A place is called a city, a town or a village as that file names it, with one change: Ranson, which the file calls a corporation, is a city on Wikipedia's list and by its size under state law, and its card says city. That makes 79 cities, 145 towns and 6 villages. Three towns go by the name the file gives in brackets: Berkeley Springs (file: Bath), Webster Springs (file: Addison) and Coalton (file: Womelsdorf). A place that crosses a county line is filed under the county where most of its people live and says "mostly in" where under 95 in 100 live there. Places with the same estimate share the higher rank. The 230 names and kinds were compared with https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_municipalities_in_West_Virginia, which has the same 230. The four classes of municipality are those of West Virginia Code 8-1-3 (https://code.wvlegislature.gov/8-1-3/). The two names of Berkeley Springs and Webster Springs were read at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berkeley_Springs,_West_Virginia and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Webster_Springs,_West_Virginia, Thurmond's ownership at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thurmond,_West_Virginia, and the state capital checked against https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_capitals_in_the_United_States the same day.
