Five places that were metro townships

Kearns, Magna, Copperton, Emigration Canyon and White City, all in Salt Lake County, were metro townships, a kind of local government Utah created in 2015. A state law turned all five into ordinary municipalities in 2024. Kearns and Magna have over 35,000 people each, and Copperton has 770.

Twenty-nine counties, from 24 places to one

Utah County has 24 cities and towns and Salt Lake County 23. Morgan County has one, the city of Morgan, and the largest town in Daggett County, Manila, has 317 people. One name misleads: Uintah is in Weber County, while the largest city of Uintah County is Vernal.

  • Draper's card says mostly in Salt Lake County: about 7 in 100 of its people live in Utah County.

How this list was compiled: All 255 cities and towns of Utah, each with the county that holds most of its people, its population and its place among the 255. Figures are the US Census Bureau's Vintage 2025 City and Town Population Totals, the estimates for 1 July 2025 (https://www2.census.gov/programs-surveys/popest/datasets/2020-2025/cities/totals/sub-est2025.csv, read 2026-10-09). A place is called a city or a town as that file names it, with one change: Vineyard, a town in the file, has been a city since 2016 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vineyard,_Utah) and its card says city. Places with the same estimate share the higher rank. A card says "mostly in" where under 95 in 100 of the people live in the county named. Heber City goes by its usual name (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heber_City,_Utah); the file writes Heber. The 255 names were compared with https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_municipalities_in_Utah, which has the same 255; that page was also read for the rule that tells a town from a city and for the five metro townships, which a state law of 2024 (H.B. 35, https://le.utah.gov/~2024/bills/static/HB0035.html) converted into municipalities classed by population; the file calls all five cities, while https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copperton,_Utah calls Copperton, with under 1,000 people, a town, and its card keeps the file's word, and the state capital checked against https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_capitals_in_the_United_States the same day.
