How it works

Random Montana cities from all 56 counties
Every county has a city or town, and 17 have exactly one: Winnett, with 205 people, is the only one in Petroleum County. Two names point elsewhere. The city of Deer Lodge is in Powell County, not Deer Lodge County, and the town of Sheridan is in Madison County.
Butte and Anaconda, merged with their counties
Butte joined Silver Bow County in one government in 1977, and Anaconda did the same with Deer Lodge County; both cards say merged. Walkerville, a town of 649 people that Butte surrounds, stayed separate, so it has its own card and Butte's figure leaves it out.
Browning, in Glacier County, gave up its town government in 2018 and has no card.
Kalispell, in Flathead County, gained more than 6,000 people between 2020 and 2025, the most of any Montana city.

How this list was compiled: All 127 cities and towns of Montana, each with its county, its population and its place among the 127. Figures are the US Census Bureau's Vintage 2025 City and Town Population Totals, the estimates for 1 July 2025 (https://www2.census.gov/programs-surveys/popest/datasets/2020-2025/cities/totals/sub-est2025.csv , read 2026-10-09). A place is called a city or a town as that file names it: 52 cities and 73 towns. The other two are merged city and county governments: Butte, which the file lists as Butte-Silver Bow (balance), and Anaconda, which it lists as Anaconda-Deer Lodge County. Butte's figure is the balance row, which leaves out the town of Walkerville; Walkerville has its own card. Places with the same estimate share the higher rank. The 127 names were compared with https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_municipalities_in_Montana , whose table has the same 127 and Browning, which gave up its town government on 26 September 2018 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Browning,_Montana ) and is not in the file. That page was also read for the classes of cities and towns. The two mergers of 1977 were read at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Butte,_Montana and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anaconda,_Montana , Walkerville at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walkerville,_Montana , and the state capital checked against https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_capitals_in_the_United_States the same day.
