Random TV Show Generator With Years, Country, Seasons and Premise: how it works

Press the button and five TV shows come up, each with its years, its country and one line on the premise; a show that has ended also prints its season count. The list holds 499 series from 22 countries, from a New York sitcom of 1951 to four that began in 2025. Two rows of chips, era and genre, narrow the draw.

Run a first-episode club

Once a week, set the count to 1 and draw. Everyone watches the first episode only, then votes: carry on, or draw again. An end year means that run has ended, though some shows come back; 414 of the 499 have one. For one weekend, look for the 9 lines that end in miniseries.

What the years, country and seasons mean

Years run from the first episode to the last, counting any gap before a revival, so Doctor Who reads 1963–2025 although it was off air from 1989 to 2005. A show still running prints no season count, because that figure changes. Comedy is the largest genre with 194 shows and Animation the smallest with 76; 22 quiz, contest, factual and preschool shows come up only under Any genre. No franchise has more than five entries, and the DC and Marvel superheroes get five series each. Last checked 18 September 2026.

Tips

  • Try a country swap: 63 shows come from outside the US and the UK, from Denmark to South Korea.
  • The list runs from preschool cartoons to crime dramas written for adults. Check the age rating before pressing play with children in the room.
  • Bookmark the page with your chips set: the address keeps the era and the genre, so each visit opens on the same filter.

Questions and answers

Does the random show generator say where to stream each series?

No. Streaming rights move between services and differ by country, so any answer printed here would soon be wrong. Each card gives the exact title, the years and the country, enough to find the right show when two share a name.

Why do some British shows have only two seasons?

A low count does not mean a show failed. Fawlty Towers made two series of six episodes each, in 1975 and 1979, and stopped at 12. A yearly run is a season in North America and a series in Britain; we print both as seasons.

Can I use a random show for charades or a quiz?

Yes. For charades, set the count to 1 and tap Before 2000 with Animation for the 32 cartoons the grown-ups remember. For a quiz, read the line aloud without the title: the years and the country are the clues. Anime has its own page, the random anime generator.

How this list was compiled: List chosen and every line written for this site; nothing is copied from Wikipedia, a listings guide or a broadcaster. Each series was checked on 2026-09-18 against its own English Wikipedia article, infobox first (index: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lists_of_television_programs; read through the Wikipedia API): air dates, season count, country of origin, and each name, number and place in the line. Years run from the first regular episode to the last, counting any gap before a revival that the article treats as the same series, so an end year means that run is over, not that the show can never return; a pilot or special aired before the first season does not set the start year (The Bill, Curb Your Enthusiasm). A series still running prints 'present' and no season count, because that figure changes; nor does one whose article gives two figures. A finished series prints the infobox season count (a British 'series' is a season), a single-run serial its episode count, and a one-off run is marked as a miniseries. There is no streaming or channel field, because that changes by country and by month. Left out on purpose: anime (it has its own page), talk and sketch shows named after a living host, series made as adult entertainment, and dramatisations of real crimes against private people. Crime and war dramas written for adults are in, so check the age rating. Quiz, contest, factual and preschool series name no contestant and have a decade chip but no genre chip. A remake with its own article is a separate entry with the year in its title. At most 5 series per franchise; superhero series based on DC Comics titles count as one franchise and those based on Marvel Comics titles as another. On 2026-09-18 the list was cut from 585 to 499 series to keep the page light: 12 comic-book series to meet that cap, and 74 series from the United States or the United Kingdom whose English Wikipedia article exists in 14 or fewer other languages (Wikipedia API, that day), a rough sign that a show did not travel; series from other countries were not cut. Text only: no posters, logos, title cards or stills. 499 series from 22 countries, 414 finished and 85 still running on the check date. Reviewed every 12 months, and sooner for running series.
