Random Animated Movie Generator: Hand-Drawn, Stop-Motion, Computer: how it works

Press the button and three animated films appear, each with its year, MPA rating, technique, studio and premise. The list holds 308 features from 1926 to 2025: 167 hand-drawn, 34 stop-motion and 132 computer-animated, 25 of them mixing two techniques. Thirty are for grown-ups, and the page opens without them.

Settle film night with four rows of chips

The four rows combine, so each tap narrows the draw. G and PG with Stop-motion leaves 22 films, and Comedy cuts those to 14. Hand-drawn, 1990s and Musical leaves 14, all rated G or PG. Lock the title somebody wants and press again for the rest. Start with a genre and the page works as a random cartoon movie generator by genre.

Where the ratings and techniques come from

Ratings come title by title from the Motion Picture Association's database: 248 of the 308 films have one and the other 60 say Not rated. Technique follows each film's Wikipedia article or Wikipedia's yearly list of animated features. Rotoscoped and oil-painted films count as hand-drawn, cut-outs and silhouettes as stop-motion. Genre comes from the article's opening sentence, so a musical fantasy sits under both chips. Last checked 19 September 2026.

Tips

  • Not rated only means no entry was found. For young children, tap G and PG.
  • Film club: tap Before 1970 and draw one a week. The 28 films last over six months.
  • Five premises end with No dialogue, which suits a room of mixed ages and languages.

Questions and answers

What counts as an animated movie on this list?

A feature by the Academy's own test: longer than 40 minutes, with animation in at least 75 percent of the running time. Films mixing live action and animation throughout were left out, with shorts, series and television specials. A few that stayed have short live-action passages, such as the concert hall scenes in Fantasia.

Why do some animated films say grown-ups?

Thirty films sit in a grown-ups band: all 7 rated R, plus 23 that are unrated or carry a PG from before PG-13 existed, with adult subjects such as war, illness or violence. Their cards say grown-ups after the rating, and none appears until you tap Every film or Grown-ups. PG-13 dates from 1 July 1984, so an older PG can be stronger than one today.

Is a cartoon movie the same as an animated movie?

On this page, yes. Used as a random cartoon movie generator or a random animation movie generator, it draws from one list: full-length films made frame by frame, from the silhouette cut-outs of 1926 to the computer-animated releases of 2025. They come from 32 countries by first-listed producer, led by the United States (171), France (30) and Japan (24).

How this list was compiled: Compiled by Random Generator HQ from general film knowledge, then every line checked on 2026-09-19 against two live sources. What counts: a film is on the list only if it is an animated feature by the Academy's own test, more than 40 minutes long with animation in at least 75 percent of the running time (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academy_Award_for_Best_Animated_Feature). Films that Wikipedia's opening sentence calls live-action/animated were left out (The Phantom Tollbooth, Dot and the Kangaroo), with one exception the Academy itself accepted as an animated feature, Marcel the Shell with Shoes On. A few kept films have short live-action passages, such as the concert hall host in Fantasia and the framing story in Balto. Year, running time, studio, country and the wording of each premise were checked against the film's own English Wikipedia article (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ plus the film title). The year is the first release year the article gives. The King and the Mockingbird is dated 1980, the year the finished film came out, and The Tale of the Fox 1937, its first release. Technique: hand-drawn means drawn or painted frame by frame on cels, paper or a tablet, including rotoscoped and oil-painted films. Stop-motion means puppets, clay, cut-outs or silhouettes photographed frame by frame. Computer-animated means built in software, whether 3D models or 2D vector animation. We used the film's own article where it says how the film was made (238 films) and otherwise the Animation technique column of Wikipedia's list of animated feature films for that year (70 films), for example https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_animated_feature_films_of_2013. A film the sources describe as mixed carries two techniques. Fantastic Planet is filed as cut-out animation after https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cutout_animation and the article's own categories, although the 1973 list calls it traditional. Two films were left out because neither source settled the technique. Ratings: each film was looked up by title in the Motion Picture Association's database at https://www.filmratings.com and the certificate number is kept in the data. 78 are G, 143 PG, 20 PG-13, 7 R, and 60 have no entry we could match and are shown as Not rated, which is not a statement that a film suits children. PG-13 has existed only since 1 July 1984 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motion_Picture_Association_film_rating_system), so an older PG can be stronger than a modern one. Some titles are filed there under another name: The Thief and the Cobbler as Arabian Knight, Rock & Rule as Ring Of Power, My Life as a Courgette as My Life As A Zucchini, The Pirates! as The Pirates! Band Of Misfits, and Underdogs with the alternate title Foosball. Princess Mononoke, Perfect Blue, Millennium Actress, Boy and the World and Mune carry the rating given for their later United States release. Where the only entries found were other films of the same name we refused them and show Not rated: Gulliver's Travels, Animal Farm, The Snow Queen, Cat City, Ghost in the Shell, Nocturna, The Painting, The Little Humpbacked Horse, Tad the Lost Explorer, Una película de huevos, Ne Zha, Valhalla and The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. The grown-ups band (30 films) holds every R film on the list (American Pop, Akira, Perfect Blue, Waking Life, Paprika, Waltz with Bashir, Ruben Brandt, Collector); unrated films whose Wikipedia article calls them adult animation (Animal Farm, Cat City, When the Wind Blows, Grave of the Fireflies, Ghost in the Shell, Mary and Max, Chico and Rita, The Rabbi's Cat, Wrinkles, Alois Nebel, Rocks in My Pockets, Buñuel in the Labyrinth of the Turtles, I Lost My Body, White Snake); four films given a PG before PG-13 existed that Wikipedia also calls adult animation (Fantastic Planet, Wizards, The Lord of the Rings, Rock & Rule); and five more placed there on our own judgement of their subject matter (Funan, The Girl Without Hands, Aya of Yop City, Fire and Ice, Allegro Non Troppo). These cards say grown-ups after the rating, and the first draw on the page leaves the band out. Rated films that Wikipedia calls adult animation but the MPA passed as PG or PG-13 stay in their MPA band. We left out films whose MPA rating reason leads with sexual content, films built around drug use, and a few crude comedies. Genre chips come from the opening sentence of each film's Wikipedia article: every genre word in it counts, so a musical fantasy sits under both. Horror, Gothic, supernatural, dark fantasy and psychological thriller are grouped as spooky; superhero, martial arts and thriller as action; coming-of-age, war, biographical and documentary as drama. Where the sentence names no genre we set one from the rest of the article (20 films), and three films whose articles name none carry none. Academy Award marks: 25 winners and 81 other nominees of the Best Animated Feature award, from the same Wikipedia page, up to the ceremony for films of 2025. Balance: no more than five films from one series, and 24 features whose first listed country is Japan, since the site has a separate anime page. Text only: no posters, stills, logos or streaming links. 308 entries on the check date. Review interval: every 12 months. Licence: own work
